Duplo picked up. So that’s something decluttered. Hooray.

we all survived first days back. By 4 pm I was flagging. Stupid jet lag.

took one lunch today though. So a win.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 30/01/2023 20:21

£10 on a large fish n chips that fed dd and I as we were late back from dropping a bday gift to my niece.

Dd starts a work experience placement this week which is causing me a headache as it's in the middle of nowhere and I'm not sure how I can get her there 🫤 going to have to talk to my boss about some flexi time I think...

Need to carefully budget for rest of month as well as it's going to be tight I think.

BigSkies2022 · 30/01/2023 20:28

need - are you in the Vale of York, then? We stayed in Staveley for a couple of nights - only a passing acquaintance, obviously, but very beautiful. Easy to get to Leeds, Knaresborough, Harrogate...everywhere seems very easy to get to, good roads, lots of countryside on the doorstep of really lovely towns. Ilkley got voted best place to live in some survey last year!

Tell me the downsides! What do I need to look out for? One thing I noticed was that all that lovely countryside is farmed and even the walks listed as dog-off-lead-friendly in practice require you to keep your dog on the lead so as not to risk troubling livestock.

For me, I think the barrier will be finding the right house. We've spent 10 years in a lovely Edwardian house, getting it right, and I've got another 5 years of love for it, before I really don't want to pick up a paintbrush and redo the windows and soffits yet again. A contemporary house, more rural than urban - aluminium double glazed windows, underfloor heating, 3 bedrooms, proper utility room/boot room, easy kitchen, detached, wrap around garden, electric charging points, single storey, probably, no draughty chimneys - the kind of thing I've stayed in on holidays over the years. Or the right sort of barn conversion... Feels like a needle in a haystack, and I'm pretty sure we don't have the budget to self-build. Have to hope something comes up on The Modern House website!

Unescorted · 30/01/2023 20:43

Big - getting planning is difficult. Leeds itself has a really strict tightly drawn green belt.

F&C's have become so expensive around here. It used to be our cheap takeaway.... No longer. I am having to work out how to cook fish. I am well practiced with chips.

lifelongfrugaleer · 30/01/2023 21:02

The downside is tourists, national park building restrictions, it’s more ££ than you think for houses but guess not compared to down south, semi rural = driving everywhere and rubbish public transport.

enough downside? 😂

I wouldn’t trade my NE life at all, though maybe to move over the border into n York’s

BigSkies2022 · 30/01/2023 21:02

Like this house near Darlington, please, only further south

lifelongfrugaleer · 30/01/2023 21:05

Ooo I might need to go look at that one… not that i can afford it

lifelongfrugaleer · 31/01/2023 08:54

Payday!

xogossipgirlxo · 31/01/2023 10:37

lifelongfrugaleer · 31/01/2023 08:54

Payday!

Woohoo 😁

NSD today for me, husband took my card and spent 5 quid to top up his canteen card.

I'm trying to get hold of my GP, as I am pregnant and noticed my thyroid is swollen 😫Hopefully I can be referred to blood test asap.

xogossipgirlxo · 31/01/2023 11:02

GP will ring me this afternoon, phew.

lifelongfrugaleer · 31/01/2023 11:58

Phew

Captainladder · 31/01/2023 12:46

@BigSkies2022 That house looks gorgeous! I'd move there in a heart beat.

@xogossipgirlxo hope you get a blood test sorted soon.

Hooray for paydays @lifelongfrugaleer

DH gets paid around on the 23rd each month which is a hangover from when he was paid by cheque! He's been with the same company for almost 18 years which must be some kind of record....

I've just managed to get my tax return done by the skin of my teeth... none owed which is good since I have almost no money in the company bank account and bad because it means I haven't made much this year! Still, I'm quite pleased to have finally done the accounts and seen that I have made a tiny profit in the first year.
Am making more of an effort to keep the books up to date this year!

spends from yesterday
139 for the dog walker
15 on a computer game for the kids (VR fishing?! Probably cheaper and warmer than taking my DS2 fishing ... makes me laugh though when I watch him pretend to reel in a fish with the handset thing)
6 on graph paper for DS1 school
2.60 for a coffee for me after yoga class. The first class is free but I'll need to pay after that. I enjoyed it so much though. Totally worth it.

today DH has a dentist appointment - filling required so that will be a bit spendy... we can't get an NHS dentist for him, he fell off the current practice's books in lockdown - they called to offer him and me appointments and put us back on the books but when we turned up apparently only I was eligible.... and actually they tried to make me pay private fees!!!! So we ended up paying for DH's as a private appointment - I was so cross, but he was a bit more relaxed about it. He needs a root canal done at some point but he's not going to go there!!! It still makes me annoyed to think about it,.... they were clearly trying it on.

Have a lovely day lovely frugaleers!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 31/01/2023 17:16

£48 petrol, quite pleased as new car seems similar to my old one on how economical it is.

Unescorted · 31/01/2023 17:21

I get paid mid month.... Half in advance and half in arrears. I have no idea why it is like that but it is.

I love modern architecture... Before we moved to the UK our house was split over 11 different levels and the patios and pool were cantilevered over the cliff. I now live in a small semi on a main road..... Where did I go wrong 😭

Captain do not get me started on dentists. Because of where we live we can't even get emergency dental treatment. Private or nothing.

kessiebird · 31/01/2023 18:29

V LSD today. £1.90 for maltesers and a can of pop in the work canteen. Took my lunch in but needed a walk (and a treat) after lunch. That's it.

captain my DH was taken off the books at his NHS dentist and can't get on the books of mine and DC. It's annoying and worrying if he needs work done!

Payday for me too!

BigSkies2022 · 31/01/2023 18:29

captain - that house has good bones, doesn't it? I suspect that closer inspection would reveal the need for a darn good facelift over those bones, but still - those windows! that layout! that garden!

Right, off to make squash and coconut soup for dinner, with naan sides. Luckily, we have some chocolate in the house if that is sounding too healthy.

xogossipgirlxo · 31/01/2023 19:55

Got my bloods booked for 16th of February. I an having midwife appointment booked for 8th, I think I’ll ask her if she could take extra sample for the sake of this referral😂 Probably not, but worth a try. I hope it’s nothing and I only got scared.

CurlsandCurves · 31/01/2023 20:52

@xogossipgirlxo hope your bloods are ok and if not things are easy to sort.

@lifelongfrugaleer we are payday twins!

£15 in B&M on cleaning bits.

needastrongoneagain · 31/01/2023 20:53

Evening!

NSD today to end the month and leftover lamb curry stretched to another meal too.

@BigSkies2022. I'm right on the North Yorkshire border. It's a lovely area, close enough to the delights of the countryside but also good amenities (apart from the bus service....) nearby. I haven't encountered too many issues re dogs on leads, but we live less than ten minutes drive to 3 large country parks, in addition to the countryside.

It's expensive here though, and the closer the York or Harrogate you go, the pricier in gets. The houses in York - stunning. I can't advise about further afield though sadly!

In good frugal news, DH can now transfer to my car to get home, so £50 a week saved.

Curled up with the dogs reading my recipe books after a long walk with a friend.

Hope the blood test etc gets sorted @xogossipgirlxo
