Electric bill

Live on my own in a small 2 bed flat. All electric. 1 convector heater on the wall in the lounge which is turned on for about 3 -4 hours in an evening. Nothing abnormal used otherwise, tv, lights, fridge/freezer, washing machine, oven, shower. Water tank hasnt been on as can manage without.

Had an electric bill come through and i'm being charged over £300, with use of around 800 kilowatts. Electric use has always seemed quite high as i dont wfh. Usually about 300 kilowatts (seems high) but this month has been the worst ive had.

Thinking about contacting energy supplier to complain but dont know if this is normal for a flat all electric.

Don't suppose you had it on more during the cold spell, ie just an hour here and there to keep room up to temperature, thinking it wouldn't make much difference? Also, have you been cooking meals that take longer with it being cold, extra hots drinks? It was -7c - -12c here at night for over a week - we tried to be careful but usage way up on last year.

Having said the above, you've more than doubled your use. Might be worth turning everything off for a few hours, taking meter readings before and after just to make sure meter isn't moving and faulty.

Turn absolutely everything off, then look at your meter to see it it is still moving.
My son was in a flat and the meters for all the flats were in the basement. He was paying for another flat's usage instead of his own.

This ^.

In a small 2 bed flat when you live on your own it's hard to see where you might be using the excess energy, unless there is something like another heater, or you are using the one you have for twice as long as you say you are.

Strong chance that you may be paying for someone elses electric :( , this is quite common in flats.

Is your fridge/freezer new or old? Are the seals around the doors gaping at all?
Any underfloor heating? Electric towel rail?

who are you paying your bill to? the supplier, or an intermediary like a (crooked) landlord?

That seems not out of the question with normal all-electric usage to me.

We're all-electric, 3 beds, 2 adults 2 children. Two storage heaters for heating and don't use anything else.

My "summer" usage (ie when there's no heating on" is usually around the 400kwH mark. That's with plenty of hot water (we have a large, very well insulated cylinder).

My "winter" usage (ie with 2 storage heaters on at a temperature that keeps the main areas of the flat at around the 20c mark) is around the 900kwH mark.

Our consumption is down year on year for the last 3 years or so, mainly from getting rid of the tumble dryer, being more frugal with hot water, getting a new better insulated cylinder, not having the heaters up so high in the winter. Anything else is just tinkering around the edges - the vast, vast bulk of usage is from heating (either water, space, or to a much lesser extent food).
