Cost of shower rough guess?

How much do you think a 15 minute shower costs at the present time? Water heated by gas combi boiler, not electricity.

I have literally no idea. Could be 50p could be £3? Could be more? Does anyone actually know?

I don't know but it's probably quite easy to find a 'cost per minute of hot water' for a combi boiler and go from there.

But what I do know is that for electricity at least, it can add up to quite a lot, even if you're only average at showering by MN standards, eg I think that a family of 4 each having a 10 minute daily shower could cost about £60 pm just on showering so it's definitely worth being mindful about shower usage and not being in there longer than necessary and having a rethink if you're one of those people who think it's 'disgusting' to not have multiple daily showers.

Do you have a smart meter? If you take a reading before and after your shower (when the heating is off) you can work it out as the gas readings are separate.

15 minutes seems an awfully long time to have the shower running? Surely you just need it on twice for a couple of minutes, once to wet yourself and then to rinse of the soap etc?

I have a fully electric 10.5kw shower. It would cost 91p for 15 minutes. I've stopped spending 30 minutes in the shower now 😁

There are online energy calculators to work out running costs, not sure if they will be of any help to you.

It's about 50p. I have a smart meter and if I wash my hair I'm in the shower for about that length of time.

According to this :

metro.co.uk/2022/04/13/how-much-does-it-cost-to-take-a-shower-16445932/

A 10 minute power shower is 5.76 kWh.

That would make a 15 minute power shower 8.64 kWh (1.5x5.76kWh).

So at 10p per kWh (gas capped rate) that's about 86p.

With a combi boiler it should be easy to determine the exact cost, just record the meter reading before and after the shower, multiply by 11 (if the meter is in m3) and then multiply by 10p to get the price in pence.

15 minutes is a very long time for a shower IMO. 5 minutes a bit short but manageable if you don't have lots of haircare.

My 10-15 minute shower was 41p yesterday, a small bath for DS (1) was 12p. I know this because I'm on a smart meter, on very limited budget until Monday and saving gas only for baths and showers, checking meter every time. Washing up is about 4p.

15 mins is a long shower! You can reduce costs by a third straight away by capping it at 10min.
