Benenden Health cover worth it or waste of money?

I'm considering paying £11.90 a month for my family of 3, for Benenden Health care plan. I cannot justify the £££££s on private medical insurance and it looks like benenden is a (almost too good to be true) mid way option.
I would use it as a 'back up' to the NHS ie if the wait times are past 3 weeks then benenden will cover you upto £1,800 to go private. They don't cover everything etc.
Has anyone got this and can tell me if it's worth it or am I wasting my money?
Thank you

there does not seem to be any defnite guidlines on the actual surgery and procedures you can claim for/ i cancelled as there are no hospitals in london and most of theirs are miles away/ it seems all at the discretion of the staff on the day who gets what/

lets face it how can they provide much for everyone at the price they charge

LINDAHOAD · 21/02/2025 18:06

it is not medical health insurance like bupa and for the price people pay you service will get less and less - save your money what you would give to them and you can pay for private care

Orangesandlemons77 · 21/02/2025 18:32

I doubt it would have covered my varicose veins surgery and several referrals, including recent MRI, CT and PET scans.

Do not waste your money - you are never covered for anything -

Hannahthebanana93 · 13/10/2025 12:39

Just do not understand what they offer?
when I joined three years ago my understanding was that they offered a service akin to other private health insurers whereby you go to a hospital of their choice they do your cataracts or whatever and that’s it…
it seems like i got it completely wrong and they merely offer a 10% discount on the cost of the operation, not unlike Denplan whereby you pay about £300 pounds per year to get 10% off your yearly dental costs which in my case is about £90 pounds per year…

I’ve had healthshield with my past two employers. This year I’ve claimed contact lens costs, dental fees etc.

BeLuckyRoseOP · 22/11/2025 23:25

It is an absolute waste money. Paid in for 7 years never contacted them . Had sudden stroke this year and attended nhs a&e, kept in for few hours, consultant saw me for total 8 mins at end of day, rattled off some meds and discharged me. Applied to Benenden weeks later asking to see neurologist, as nhs refused me. Benenden refused stating they do not cover second opinions! I complained to them to no avail. Cancelled my membership, they cover almost nothing !

Orangesandlemons77 · 24/11/2025 14:51

It's helped me loads, I had varicose veins laser treated (however don't know if they still cover that) saw a neurologist, even had CT scans and a PET scan for suspected memory problems.

Really good to deal with too, no co-pays. GP was happy to write the referral letters.

But it does have it's limitations and doesn't cover things like heart or cancer care.

Orangesandlemons77 · 24/11/2025 14:53

No, they wouldn't cover it if the NHS said it wasn't needed, they speed things up if the NHS waiting lists are long, that is clearly stated

They help if there are delays with the NHS 3-4 weeks for a referral or similar with minor surgeries.

The wait was a12 weeks on nhs so I had it done privately at 7 weeks through my Benenden.

I have had it for years, ive just had an MRI scan and 2 consultations and a guided steroid injectipn ecently. I had £1500 for investigatipn and was told i can have 6 guided steroid injections. Ive had physio as well. I have another with Benendon which covers dental, chiropody and specs, all of which ive used. When you need something done you are given a temporary Bupa membership number. Not everything is covered so check first.
