Smart meter price doubled since Jan 1st

I'm sure others are experiencing this, but our smart meter energy usage has doubled since Jan 1st. I understand there was a price increase for everyone, and we got a letter from our energy supplier stating our estimated energy price would increase by £3.50 a month. Our new contract started last October, so we aren't due another increase. Am I missing something? How can it go from £7.50 to £15 a day when the energy/hr has increased minimally? We can speak to our energy supplier but before that I was wondering if anyone has experienced the same?

Do your manual readings match up with what the sm is saying?
Smart meters are notoriously unreliable plus they give an exaggerated hourly rate when your heating first kicks in.

Read your actual meters daily/weekly, take screenshots and work out your useage.

Ours tripled on the display, DH nearly had a heart attack, but in our case it was because the tariff on the display had still been set at a much lower rate, we just got used to tripling the cost each time we looked. On 1st Jan they actually updated it to the correct cost. Could it be something like that?

Thanks to both of your replies. It seems like the usage adds up with the current rate provided; but can't see how the last couple of months add up as that rate was only a fraction lower. So perhaps the last three months have been incorrect? I'll give the supplier a callWink

We've got this and I can't work it out either. We were using £3 ish a day and now on £5 a day. Definitely not using any more than we have been. Even Christmas day when we had the heating on 3 extra hours for guests and had the oven on for approx 4hrs and all 4 hob rings on, plus showers for all 4 of us, we only used £4. Now on a normal day, heating on for 2hrs, 1 shower, hardly any cooking and we're on £5. The difference in rates per kWh don't seem different enough to cause this. I've got no idea!

Bluesky45, exactly! It's really strange, our useage was down yesterday but £7 more than the previous week! If I get an answer to what's going on I'll let you know.

You sure it's not just the smart meter monitor being updated? We have been waiting for ours to go on to new rates. 2 days ago finally its updated. Obviously we've been paying the new rates but the monitor was still displaying the old rates. Now we dont have to workout roughly how much it costing us each day.

Are you going by your in home display? They're not always accurate and iirc don't always reflect the energy price guarantee.

Has your standing charge gone up could it be that?
