How can I work out if direct debit will be enough?

So at the moment they've fixed our direct debit - we have a debit on the account at the moment how do I work out if it will be enough to even itself out in the summer? Worried about building up a massive debt over winter and then adding to it in the spring/summer

Look at last year's usage and work out what it costs at current rates for a start.

Do you have an accurate record of your usage history? It should be available on your supplier's website provided you have had an account with them for a decent length of time.

Moneysaving Expert have a calculator that helps you work out if your DD is right, however, look at the disclaimers as it doesn't take all circumstances into account. Your bill should show your estimated usage amount, although if you're one of the many who's made efforts to cut back now that prices have risen, they may be overestimates.

However, if you're in debit now, you're likely not paying enough, as you should be in credit at the moment, by about a month or two's payments.

I have history of usage.

We paid for what we used until October so yes we haven't built up the buffer. I'm trying to work out if I need to ask them to increase it so we won't just stay in debt after the government payments stop!.

Ah ok calculator says it should be lower. So that's a good start! Will review again after next bill as we've had the heating on this month.
