How much is a kilowatt of electricity?

Just generally curious because of the differences between GB and Ireland. I am in Northern Ireland, and our suppliers recently dropped the price of a kilowatt hour to 19p. This was in response to the UK govt's energy price guarantee. My electricity prior to that (Oct 2022) had jumped to about 36-37p in two months. Just reading MN threads and BBC articles from Great Britain where electricity sounds really, really expensive!

I pay 34p for a kilowatt Hour of electricity in England

I was about to give a technical explanation of a kilowatt when I saw the title.

Do you get the reduction taken off your bill then? That seems very high.

We get £400 off electricity for 6 months- but that's for everyone. So if you are a low user, it's a big reduction per kWh, if you are a high user, it's a low reduction.

I pay 35p per electricity unit and get £67 paid into my bank account from the government for six months which started in October through to match.

March!

In November I used 175kwh of electricity at cost of £57, so 32p per KWH. Plus £12.69 standing charge.

Total, roughly £73.50 incl. vat but I was refunded £66 of CoL support.

Leaving me to pay the £83.30 gas bill.

cakeorwine · 18/12/2022 12:35

I use about 110 kWh of electricity a month - so about £37.
Take of the £66 for the electricity bill support and I think I am 'in profit'

However - gas has gone from 4p to 10p per kWh so that's made a difference.

I'm on Economy 7 and pay 29.44 pence per kWh for daytime and 10.36 pence per kWh for night.

Yes, we use about 90kwh. It's only put on the electric as not everyone has gas, but it's intended for the increased winter costs so I see it as being towards my combined bill.

Under the price guarantee electricity is around 34p/kwh and gas is around 10.3p/kwh

But yes, we are getting £400 applied to the electricity account in instalments of £66/£67 over the period of 6 months and that started in October

People in Northern Ireland have at last been informed that their energy help package (worth £600) will come in January, in a voucher for CASH or £600 into their bank account. Daft, but it's the best they can do in such a fragmented energy market. Unfortunate for the children of stupid or selfish parents (or addicts) or people trapped in coercive or abusive relationships.
