Living upstairs as it’s warmer

Well I wouldn’t say we are completely living upstairs but as it’s just me and one teenager at home who spends most of their time in their bedroom anyway, we have been spending much of our time upstairs during the last week when it has been so cold.

My house is small but open plan downstairs and upstairs is much warmer. We have a small bedroom each and we both have an electric blanket.

Today I made tea and now I am going upstairs to wrap some Christmas presents and I can watch tv there too as it’s far more warm and comfortable. Dc can join me if they want. I will switch off the heating for the evening and be absolutely fine!

I probably wouldn’t be able to do it if I had a partner or a bigger family but at the moment it makes sense. Is anyone else doing the same or using different parts of the house from usual to escape the cold and save a bit of energy?

Yep - we have a skinny townhouse and the ground floor is so cold you can see your breath. Top floor is fine!

Yep, me too! In fact, I only got out of bed two hours ago and just because I'm going out this evening. I'd still be there otherwise!

I spend most of my time in my bedroom - but I live in a bungalow so it is downstairs and next to the kitchen!

Been doing this the last few winters.
Too cold downstairs open plan so annoying when someone goes in the kitchen and disturbs a film.
No thanks.watching tv in pjs since before 6.
Made my room quite cosy with fairy lights.

Yes seems silly to sit shivering downstairs when the teens are in their rooms and it is 4 degrees warmer upstairs. Been wrapping upstairs as it’s warmer and easier to put the wrapped presents in the loft as I go.

Me too!

I spend a lot of time upstairs once dc are in bed. All round easier and warmer. I have an open plan downstairs too.

Ours is the opposite, bedrooms upstairs are much cooler. Kitchen/diner is positively freezing and no amount of heating ever warms it up.

Lounge is the most comfortable room, but its enclosed with 2 radiators and warms up quickly and keeps the heat in.

Then again, I often feel chilly and DS11 wanders round in shorts, bare feet and a tshirt saying he's not cold at all.

It's the opposite in my house. Much warmer downstairs, especially in the evenings when cooking! All open plan and the back wall is all glass. But this is also where the boiler and thermostat is, so it tends not to fire up to heat the upstairs as it reads the temp in the warmest room.

I’m so pleased I moved here last year. Moved to a bungalow. We are lucky that our gas and electric tariffs are low until next December. But I have been sitting in my bedroom under the duvet with my heated blanket and no heating on and I have been okay. So I am slightly hopeful that when we loose our tariff next year it won’t be totally freezing.

different from a ‘normal ‘ house. But my bedroom is next to my living room. So doesn’t feel weird at all. Didn’t like living in a bungalow until the winter time came in. a quick dash down the hall and I can get to the kitchen for snacks 🤣

We have a top floor flat, kind of glad atm, heating bills not too high and most rooms quite warm (is a 3 bed) I think we may benefit from the flat belows heating as well. We have a fire in the lounge some colder nights and all go in there.

Barn conversion. Open plan layout downstairs and chilly unless the heating is on constantly. We gravitate to the bedroom around 7pm as there are just two of us. The bedroom is the warmest room in the house currently 22 degrees. When family visit we switch the heating on, switch the Aga style cooker and light the woodburner . It seems wasteful
When there is only two of us.

The other day I was about to put to heating on then realised i could get away without putting it on if I got jn bed. Got my laptop out and got under the duvet to fo my work. Was warm but not comfortable😂
