There is a draft. Where the fuck is it coming from?!

I'm in bed sick, so it's not the vent for the back boiler. The windows are all shut, as are the curtains, and there is a curtain on the front door too. All seals etc are fine as far as I can see, but the windows are fairly old.

Attic is insulated, loft hatch isn't, and there is a slight hole in the ceiling. But no windows in the attic, and as far as I'm aware no obvious breeze in the attic.

I can feel a very clear breeze. How do I find where it is coming from 😩🥶

Chimney?

BeyondTheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter · 14/12/2022 15:44

Only fireplace is in the living room (where the boiler is), and I'm quite far away from it

Our cat flap is the culprit here.

BeyondTheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter · 14/12/2022 15:44

No cat flap 😩

Floorboards?

If it's wall to wall carpet then obvs a ghost.

BeyondTheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter · 14/12/2022 15:50

Wall to wall carpet upstairs, yep. Slate in the kitchen and laminate in the living room. All with decent underlay

So must be a ghost then 😬😂

Can you light a candle and move slowly around the house with it or a very light bit of material like a ribbon.

I have air bricks all over the sodding place in my house its as draughty as buggery

leithreas · 14/12/2022 15:55

Letterbox? Before we changed our front door our letterbox was awful.

GrouchyKiwi · 14/12/2022 16:10

Around the skirting boards?

Quveas · 14/12/2022 16:21

Stupid suggestion here, but they were the culprits of my "where the hell is that draft coming from?" moments - plugholes / waste water / overflows. They are holes that go out of the house (obviously) but what goes "out" also comes "in".

KnittedCardi · 14/12/2022 16:26

Bathrooms are often quite drafty. Our old bathroom was appalling, DH ended up stuffing bubble wrap in all the spaces under the bath, behind the toilet, around the outlet pipes etc.

Our new bathroom is fully sealed with tiles and back to wall loo, and a stand alone bath..... no drafts 😊

ODFOx · 14/12/2022 16:37

Heat rises so my bet is on the hole in the ceiling and the loft hatch.

GasPanic · 14/12/2022 16:41

if your loft is well insulated then it will be freezing.

Maybe check out "slight hole in ceiling".

BMW6 · 14/12/2022 16:48

Bathroom extractor? I have one on my shower cubicle and get a wicked draft when the wind is blowing in a particular direction

Agreed. We got one with an automatic closing hole for this very reason!

CoffeeBeansGalore · 14/12/2022 16:51

Airbricks

BessieSurtees · 14/12/2022 16:53

The loft hatch if the rest is insulated the cold will come through there, or the slight hole in the ceiling.

Less obvious are air vents, air bricks, skirting boards and window seals especially where they close.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/12/2022 17:56

I think If some of your rooms are warm and others are cold, you get air movement around the house even with no actual draught.

Also, check round the seals and frames of your upvc windows. I use masking tape to cover the edges of mine and to seal my sliding patio door shut, it makes a surprisingly strong breeze.

Rushingfool · 14/12/2022 18:00

Loft hatch would be my guess. Coming down through it, down the stairs and up again through the chimney. Use a candle to work it out.

MadameMackenzie · 14/12/2022 18:04

I'm going to say windows. Even if they're closed & locked and are double glazing pvc ones, they can have small gaps which appear over time and they are hugely noticeable.
Also, my windows have little flaps in the frames at the top and when they're open - wow! The breeze is crazy

BeyondTheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter · 15/12/2022 17:05

I'm still fluey today, so staying in bed - but thank you for all of the ideas! Soon as I'm able, I'll go around and check all of them.

Also - ffs - DRAUGHT!! (stupid ill brain)

AssumingDirectControl · 15/12/2022 17:08

Maybe you need something like this?

octopus.energy/blog/flir-thermal-cameras/

Seems they aren’t booking out any more on loan but maybe your provider has ideas?

BeyondTheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter · 15/12/2022 17:17

That does look ideal, but I've checked and eon don't seem to have them (their advice on draughts is to get professional draught-proofing - and if I could afford that I'd buy myself a thermal camera!)
