Oil filled radiators

I'm looking at buying a oil filled radiator, would you recommend them? Are they fairly cheap to run? It would be to warm a small kitchen / dining room for a couple hours. Thanks

Good point, thank you. I'll stick with the oil filled one

Fan heaters are better if you want to heat a room up quickly for a short period of time. Oil filled radiators are better if you want to keep a room warm continuously.

I have a 2Kw one, so costs double the unit price per kWh to run.

For me on an economy 7 that's quite expensive for a couple hours in the evening (cheaper rates done kick in until 1am which is useless to me) and costs just under £2 for that time. I was setting it to come on for 2/3 hours before waking which would benefit from the cheaper night rate.

But now as it's gotten so cold I've just put it away and turned on the storage heater, which is much more expensive to run but more effective for longer term heating

We had some when our boiler broke and they were surprisingly good. I’m not sure on cost but they were much better at heating rooms quickly than I was expecting and then retaining heat.

I ran a small 2kw in my kitchen for a month, set to a medium temperature, and it doubled my electricity bill that month. Having the gas central heating on 24/7 would have been cheaper.

I tried one in my front room last night instead of central heating.

It'd have worked out at least £3 a day more expensive to heat just that room for 18h than heating my whole flat with gas.

I couldn't get my front room to stay at 21°, the rest of my flat was SO cold (it took 3 hours to get my bedroom up to 18 once the central heating went back on) and the condensation was horrendous.

I've found a cost conversion, I'm going to get a 1500w that will cost 51p per hour, a hour will be enough to get to temp then turn off.

I got a 2kw one of Amazon. Chucks off the heat and gets my office really toasty.

Much lighter and smaller than I imagined but very effective.

They are heavy to lug around, cost about 2x as much as a convection heater, take longer to warm up (which is why they take longer to cool down). They are also no more or less costly to run than any other electric heater.

If I was on a budget and wanted something portable to move round rooms I would go for one of those £20 convection heaters. The only time I would not go for these is if I had kids who would bump into it or spill stuff in it. Oil filled radiators are more kid proof.

I've just plugged mine in, timer is set for 1 hr, see how it warms up and how long it stays warm for

Thank you, didn't realise they have a timer, that's good to know; what about the cost?

We used our one instead of heating the whole house, and we only had it on for a couple of hours, say, if we were sitting to watch the TV etc.

I have just bought this for my lounge and it is fab!

I've had my oil filled one on and the room warms up lovely, it says warm after it's been turned off
