Gas use through the night when I'm asleep?

Just this really.
For the past two days my in home display and the two apps I have on my phone have registered gas use at different times during the night when I'm asleep.
Roughly 8kw both nights and it's cost me just under £4. I have a smart meter, live alone and don't sleepwalk. It's not standing charges this is extra that I'm supposedly using.
I've been onto the energy company about it and all they said was if I think my meter is wrong they can arrange for someone to come and test it, but if it's working fine I have to pay a fee for the test. This doesn't seem right or fair if I'm going to be billed for what I haven't used, has anyone experienced this?
I'm worried it'll continue or go even higher, if it continues it's nearly £14 a week!

Have you got a combi boiler that has comfort mode switched on for the water side?
This means it's firing up a preheat water function every half hour or so.

If you've changed anything on your boiler settings it could be that?

Is your boiler switched on and on a timer, maybe it's kicking in at the very very low temps overnight?

Try switching it off completely at night?

boiler could have freeze protection..?? it would come on just a little..??

NCTDN · 09/12/2022 22:35

I was also going to say freeze protection

I don't think the boilers got a comfort setting it just has the hot water/heating settings. I think it's a condenser boiler? I might be wrong, I don't know anything about them but I get instant hot water. Is there a way to check if it has an antifreeze setting? I can't see any settings on it just the dial for water and heating. Obviously if it's the antifreeze setting I'll leave it. It's a potterton promax combi HE plus.
I'll try google see what I can find.

Most boilers do fire up a little in the night by default unless you tell them not to, to keep water hot and ready for use, but not to that degree.

How is your sense of smell? Is it possible you have a gas leak and can't smell it?

Does your heating have a timer or is it set to come on when the temperature drops to a certain level?

Can you afford a heating engineer to come out and check your boiler? At £4 a day, that's £28 a week, not £14, so the call out would pay for itself within a few weeks!

Have you read the actual reading on the meter? It would be worth doing that to check the readings match up with the app.

Unforgettablefire · 10/12/2022 08:41

@PlantDoctor the £4 was for the two days. Yesterday I "used" £2.86 worth of gas. I washed my hands and face and did the dishes, normally I use about 50p a day.
I'm going to check the meter, I'm new to all of this I only started watching it when the prices went up.

I've looked at the meter and can only see the full amount of gas I've used since the meter was put in.
I've just been upstairs and the boiler is firing up and the radiators have warmed slightly even though the heating is completely off so it looks like the pp saying it's the anti frost setting are right, it's 0 outside.
So another question... if I'm using nearly £3 in gas overnight would it help to just put the heating on now and then to stop the anti frost kicking in? At least then I'd be getting the house warmed a bit!

The manual for you boiler is here: www.gentoogroup.com/media/1xnjamg1/promax-combi-user-guide.pdf

The boiler has frost protection, so it will turn on if the temperature of the water drops below 5 degrees C. I would suggest you run it for a little while during the day so that you get the benefit of the heat.

Thank you I'll do that. It seems you can't win you lose money trying to save it 😀
Thanks again for the replies.
