Useing the water from hot water bottle again for next night's bottle

This is ok isn't it? As in empty all 4 bottles worth into the kettle, boil them fill bottles again? I'd be sure to empty the kettle before using it for cooking or making a brew

In milder weather I'd just empty it into my hanging basket or garden pots.

Seems such a waste otherwise

Lots of tiny actions really add up.

Just think how much the saving would be if every household used just 1litre less water a day

That's over 28 million litres every day - a saving worth having

The average household uses about 350 litres a day. It would be a lot easier to save a litre of water by having someone run their shower for 5 seconds less (and that would be saving hot water, not cold).

The hot water bottle litre has already served a lot more purpose — by keeping someone warm and saving energy — than nearly any other single litre of water used that day. It doesn't seem to me like a prime target for further efficiencies.

As a student I used the hot water bottle, water to wash in the morning, smelt of rubber all day, lol

That cracked me up lol

SirenSays · 07/12/2022 16:04

I've debated putting it back into the kettle but scared it would ruin it. Now I leave the hot water bottle in bed to stay warm while I take the dogs for their morning run and then use it to wash their muddy feet

Hope your dogs appreciate that nice little luxury, a warm foot bath!

Dreamstate · 07/12/2022 17:14

I suppose if you have a garden with a water butt you could just chuck it in there to use in summer

GlacindaTheTroll · 07/12/2022 17:52

liveforsummer · 07/12/2022 16:20

@GlacindaTheTroll but surely you'd need to rinse out the kettle at least once with at least a similar small amount of water?

Only if you are using your main electric kettle.

An old kettle on the hob would be fine, and not need rinsing

megletthesecond · 07/12/2022 18:14

I would not do this. The tiny amount of pennies it would save would be cancelled out by having to buy a new kettle after the old one was messed up with rubber residue.

nzborn · 07/12/2022 18:24

I used to have two jugs one for got water bottle water and one for domestic use

Clovacloud · 07/12/2022 18:39

I’ve got a small water butt but the back door, Any water, like hot water bottle water, or condenser tumble drier water, goes in there. Then I use it in the spring on the plants.

Tuichi · 07/12/2022 18:43

I’ve experienced the rubber bits. Quite happily reusing water like this until I looked inside the kettle one day and saw lots of tiny pink pellets at the bottom.

Sewwhatmrmagpie · 07/12/2022 18:48

I wouldn't because I don't want to drink or cook with rubbery water!

inininsomnia · 07/12/2022 18:48

I'm one of the more frugal people on the planet but constantly recycling small volumes of rubbery water sounds both pointless and joyless. Sorry, OP.

WednesdayFridayAddams · 07/12/2022 18:49

I remember getting a slap on the back of the legs for doing this as a child.

DF had filled the kettled and made a cup of coffee ages after I’d reboiled my hot water bottle water in the kettle and his coffee tasted of rubber. I didn’t do that again that’s for sure!

WeirdPookah · 07/12/2022 18:50

I think flushing the toilet with it is a safer use of the water.

CatsFreakingMeOut · 07/12/2022 18:51

Seems pointless - as someone else has pointed out, you'd need to use the same amount of water to rinse your kettle out afterwards (I'd need to boil it too, wasting electricity as well)

StickofVeg · 07/12/2022 19:00

Personally I wouldn't put re-used hot water bottle water in a kettle that I boiled water for my drinks in! It'll have little bits of rubber in it which you'll need to wash out so you may as well use fresh water for the bottle.

antshouse · 07/12/2022 19:03

My Mum told me she used to reheated the hot water bottle water to wash the dishes in the mornings, back in the sixties. She couldn't bear breaking the ice on the well to get fresh water first thing in the morning and hoped one of the neighbours would get round to it if she waited long enough. 😆

Calmdown14 · 07/12/2022 19:36

Don't you use more water washing out the kettle than just filling it up again?

I'd use it for the plants or the mop bucket but probably not in the kettle for the rubbery taste

LadyOfTheFliessssss · 07/12/2022 19:41

I've done this for years because I know I'm boiling the exact amount of water I need.

I don't drink hot drinks though and the kettle is for my sole use.

Depends on what vessel you use when re-heating. It doesn't have to be an electric kettle - could be an old kettle on the hob

And of course any reuse is the same saving.

And lots of small savings add up.

WyldeSwan · 07/12/2022 19:53

Reboiling water - regardless of if it's previously also been in a hot water bottle - is suppose to make limescale build up quicker, so you are also potentially going to spend more descaling your kettle and potentially shorten it's lifespan too. For such a small amount of water I'd find some other way to reuse it.

I thought you meant pouring hot water bottle into baby bottles for milk. I thought you had gone mad!

I like this solution I'm going to look at one of those, thanks!

I'm gutted we got rid of our scabby looking but workable kettle a few months ago as I recently had a brainwave that we could have used that to re-boil hot water bottle water.

WeirdPookah · 09/12/2022 10:51

Had a great idea this morning... used it to defrost the car windows!!
