This can't be right??

Found out a few months ago my smart meter no longer works, so I've been sending readings to eon.

Over the last month, my gas meter has gone from 5767 to 5861. My tariff is 10.31p/kw and 28.48p standing charge.

By my reckoning I have spent less than £20 on gas over the last month. But my online account shows eon have taken £115 (from my built up credit) for gas.

Am I working this out wrong?? How can they be estimating nearly £100 over?

(FWIW, I have a combi boiler, and in June switched from gas hobs to induction, but I can't believe I spent that much on hob cooking last year!)

if it’s an old meter then that is not kw measurement as there is a volume calculation that is then applied to work out how many kw you’ve used.

Angelik · 01/12/2022 20:14

Have you included daily standing charges?

BeyondTheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter · 01/12/2022 20:14

Are you translating your meter reading from m3 (or ft3) to kWh?

The formula for mine is units x volume correction (1.022) x calorific value (39) / 3.6

Angelik · 01/12/2022 20:14

Ignore - see you have

NewBootsAndRanty · 01/12/2022 20:17

If your meter measures in cubic metres (m3), take the amount of gas used, shown with 'm³' on the front of your bill. Multiply the m3 figure by a conversion factor of 1.02264, then by the calorific value (I'm using 40 as a rough guess). Calorific values vary; you should find this on your bill. Divide this figure by 3.6 to show your usage in kWh.

So if you've used 94 units on your meter, that's 1068kwh, or £110, so my VCF is out.. £8.50 standing charge needs adding on too.

BeyondTheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter · 01/12/2022 20:17

So using my numbers (cause they're roughly the same) it would be

94 (meter reading) x 1.022 x 39 / 3.6 = 1,040.74

then 1040.74 x 10.31 (p/kwh) = £107.30
then standing charge on top

Athenen0ctua · 01/12/2022 20:18

Your meter is likely in m^3 not kwh. You'd multiply units by roughly 11 first to get kwh.

DonnaDonna0 · 01/12/2022 20:21

It’s right, the calculation is as @BeyondTheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter said depending on what your tariff is. It’s not the amount you use on the meter X p/kw.
It’s beyond frightening how much gas and electricity is costing and going up again after Christmas.

MeMyBooksAndMyCats · 01/12/2022 20:24

They're correct as others have explained. Gas costs a fortune nowadays I'm spending £7-8 a day on a prepayment meter and only have my heating at 16 for two hours a day! It's very very scary.

CocoPlum · 01/12/2022 20:26

Ah ok that makes WAY more sense! I've been trying to google working out energy bills but keep finding calculators telling me how to work out individual devices.

I asked for a smart meter and they just said "we're aiming to get everyone a smart meter bythe end of 2025". So that was helpful!

Thank you all for your help and not being patronising when I was clearly being a.bit dumb!

It's not dumb - I only know the answer as I asked the same question a few months back! Why have I spent my entire adult life not reading my energy bills?! 😨

I know! The worst part is, it's nearly £4 a day on gas and I'm still bloody cold all. The. Time.

Electricity meters measure in kwh but Gas measures in m³ or ft³ and you need to do a calculation to convert to kwh. If m³ you need to Multiply by 11 to get a rough estimate of the kwh value (a PP has put a fuller version of the calculation I think)

Do you have an electric blanket or hot water bottle for when you are sitting still? Wool jumper and even hat if necessary?

CocoPlum · 02/12/2022 08:49

Thermal socks over regular socks, bootie slippers. Plush lined leggings under my jeans, blanket on lap, wrist warmers, usually an extra jumper, fleece lined headband over ears, scarf 😅

Considered electric blankets for the kids but they're a little pricey for me atm.

It's just that feeling of the cold air in the house that's unpleasant and a bit depressing!

Is your energy billing company giving out free electric blankets? We got one through Octopus. It's plenty big enough for the two of us to share (plus cats), could cover three sitting together on the one sofa. Can you close the door to the sitting room and turn up the radiators in that room? Mine are on low upstairs as the heat goes up anyway, it's downstairs that needs it.
