Monthly kWh used for gas and electricity?

deuxgarcons · 26/11/2022 10:25

So the price cap (average family use) for gas is based on using 12,000 kWh pa (1,000pm) and electricity 2,900 pa (242pm).
I sat down this morning to review usage and am astounded at our kWh usage and really need to work out where we use it as we use much more than this.
I started to take monthly readings in July and our usage has been
Gas
July 437
Aug 909
Sept 1908
Oct 2272

Electric
July 456
Aug 523
Sept 526
Oct 484

Gas hot water, heating and gas fire which we haven't used in above figs and won't use this winter as we have now blocked up chimney to reduce drafts. Our boiler is ancient so it must be that?. We have turned down temp on water and have it on less. Heating now on 1 hr in morning and 2 hours evening.

Electric I am wondering about old freezer in our cellar which is an 'overflow' freezer for main one but think I'll defrost and switch off as it only has frozen chips and bread in it!! Also cellar has old fridge and florescent light which is always on so will turn that off now. No electric showers.

We are in a semi 5 bed (drafty) Victorian house. 4 people down to 3 now as one has gone off to Uni which is why I think electric went down in Oct!!.

What is everyone else's kWh usage?

This is what I'm trying to figure out. I do have large house which is older but I have a new boiler just fitted. I have heating on some days 1 or 2 hours no gas fires no gas cooker. No gas leaks as boiler just fitted and all gas checked.
I have had my bill in for 1 month £316.
1552 kwh on gas.
It's the gas I can't understand as the only thing we use it for is heating and boiler. The gas was £166 of the above bill more than the electricity which the electricity we do use.

@Athenen0ctua if you have a smart thermostat like Hive (I'm guessing you don't) you can see how long your heating has actually been on each day which is often very different to the time it's set to be on Smile

Oh ok, no just a standard thermostat and timer.

GasPanic · 01/12/2022 17:34

@Sitdowncupoftea

My gas bill states "high usage" as 46.5 kWh per day. That is averaged over the whole year of course, so in winter it will be more and in summer less.

You are averaging 52 kWh per day for October. So it is not an outrageous amount if you have a big house.

OTOH if you are only having the heating on for 1 or 2 hours per day it does seem a little on the high side, unless you have a massive boiler or you are generating quite a lot of hot water too.

ivykaty44 · 01/12/2022 17:46

For example last Saturday my heating was set to 18c from 8am to 9pm (13 hours) but in fact was only "on" (boiler firing) for just under 2 hours.

does the hive actually tell you what times the boiler did come on? Or how many times the boiler did fire up?

ivykaty44 · 01/12/2022 17:58

my gas for November 22 is much higher as its 850kwph whereas 2021 was 1364kwph

electric for November 22 is 142kwph whereas 2021 was177kwph

so Ive manage to save £65 on this months bill, in comparison to last years usage

Withnoshoes · 01/12/2022 18:04

We’ve had our November bill today.
minimal heating of an hour or two early November increasing as it got colder to 3/4 hours a day last week or so. Only two of us and pretty low electric users, tumbler once a week for towels and bedding maybe 3/4 washes a week.

We had for November
98kwh electric
915Kwh gas ( 500 less than last year!)

Athenen0ctua · 01/12/2022 18:12

I don't have beginning of the month readings for last year to directly compare, but it looks like my usage has dropped quite a bit. I was having the heating (timed to come) on (on a thermostat) for an hour in the morning last winter as well, so the house was being heated up twice a day, only for us to leave for work and school.

Athenen0ctua · 01/12/2022 18:19

November was 85kwh electric and 28 metric units (bill hasn't come yet, but 300 odd kwh) of gas. I was pressing the 1hr button on the heating as needed for a couple of weeks, so not every day, then put the timer on for two hours in the evening from about mid November.

ivykaty44 · 01/12/2022 18:58

Ive set the heating to come on at 5.20 for 30 minutes, this heats up the house for dds2 return home from the gym and me getting up to go to the gym - I figured 30 minutes was enough to take the edge of the house whilst dd2 has breakfast before leaving for work. I don't want us to be cold but also balance using as little heating as we can get away with

Here’s my hive heating for the day. You can have it shown in time or cost it pin points the times it came on and all the temps during the day.

Upstairs in our house stays quite warm, it was 16 in my bedroom (second floor) when I woke up, 15 when I got home this evening, 11 downstairs. It's cold downstairs for breakfast but we aren't downstairs for long anyway.

ivykaty44 · 01/12/2022 19:17

OhmygodDont thanks for answering

So how much gas did you use over those 2 hours (or nearly 2 hrs) that the gas did fire up?

why if you've set the temperature for 18 is it running a degree over that temp? is that just what happens with central heating? I think mine is warmer than it says and set it for 17 degrees to combat that and save money

That’s just the temperature of the house. The heating is only on at the blue marks. I don’t know the kWh as I haven’t paid for the cost part £3.99 a month and didn’t check the meter. However I did a reading this morning and will compare it to the same time tomorrow to see what we used kWh wise however that will include all hot water including showers as I don’t have an actual smart meter.

Sitdowncupoftea · 01/12/2022 20:19

@GasPanic I just had a new boiler fitted it is a new combi so it's as economic as possible. I put heating on when necessary as my house is in the sticks and permanently below 16c . I couldn't use any less if I tried. My house is big and I don't want to turn radiators off in unused rooms as it will cause mold.

OhmygodDont · 02/12/2022 07:08

So I managed to work out we used 32Kwh after deducting what we used to use daily before the heating went on. In the end the heating was on for 2hr 51minutes.

ivykaty44 · 02/12/2022 07:52

OhmygodDont Thanks for this, I’m using 32kwph to 42kwph each day

ive not got a smart meter and have been experimenting a bit with different heating set ups and then reading the meter to see how much I’m using.

it does seem if I leave the heating set at 16degrees for 12 hrs I use only a little more kwph than just having my heating coming on and of 3x a day at 17 probably around 10kwph different. But obviously the temperature outside will alter this aspect.

I had twigged the blue was the firing up of the boiler

I don't want to turn radiators off in unused rooms as it will cause mold.

I don’t have the radiator on in my bedroom, but I don’t have mold. Does the mold appear as it’s a house with damp?

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/12/2022 06:45
