If you use oil for your heating and hot water...

How many litres per day do you use? How long does 500 litres last you? We are using 5 litres per day in a three-bedroom place, just two of us (cooking is electric). Thanks.

I guess 500 litres would last me about 5 months. We use a 1.2 litre tank in 11-13 months but obviously that will be faster in winter slower through summer.

Wafflefudge · 23/11/2022 12:16

Think that your use is probably similar but I don't know our daily amounts.

RoseLemon · 23/11/2022 16:15

I use about 1800 litres per year which works out at, funnily enough, about 5 litres a day.

RoseLemon · 23/11/2022 16:16

Sorry should have said - 3 bedroom house, 2 of us, I mostly wfh so have the heating on quite a lot.

purplemama1990 · 23/11/2022 16:22

I don't know the daily figure, but I would say that over the winter most years we seem to use up 200 litres in around 6 - 8 weeks for a 3 bed house with me, husband, and a toddler. I've never really tracked it properly though, and it depends on how much time we spend at home and how cold it is etc. Over the summer months, we use electric to heat water so don't use any oil then.

We just put in 200 litres of oil today actually, can't believe it cost £200! Pre-covid that would have cost us £110 - 120, and during covid it was as low as £70 for those 200 litres at one point!

HesDeadBenYouCanStopNow · 23/11/2022 16:22

1- 2ltrs a day in spring - autumn when mostly just heating water.
In winter 5-8ltrs depending on how long the heating is on. But we aren't scrimping on heating

HesDeadBenYouCanStopNow · 23/11/2022 16:24

Sorry should have said bigger house, 3 stories with loft conversion and older so not as insulated as many

purplemama1990 · 23/11/2022 16:25

Should say that husband works from home all the time, but only turns on heating for an hour or two during the day if he's really cold. We always turn it on for about 2 - 3 hours in the evening when we are all home. And on weekends it tends to be on for a few hours in the morning, and few hours in the evenings.

Thank you. So it sounds like we are not using too much. It's just that it's so expensive! This time last year we were paying around 40p/L, now it's at least 80p. That's horrendous.

How would I find out? Our oil tank is outside and covered with ivy, only the oil delivery man knows where the oil goes! And he just comes randomly and fills it up and bills us.

So we have a monitor that records the tank level. If you don’t have that you could divide how much you get delivered by the number of days it lasts? So we use around 6 litres a day in winter ( our monitor 1 bar equals 125 litres roughly and lasts between 14 ( bad winter) to 28 days in winter) a lot longer in summer

We're about 1800 a year so that's prob average.

Has anyone looked into energy funding (child benefit is one of the eligible entry) so we are getting 70mm insulation on the external walls that are not yet insulated, air source heat pump with all new radiators and solar panels that work with sun and moon!!

Insulation being done this week and then air pump starts next week and then solar panel fitting week after.

The target areas are the rural/semi rural running off oil at the minute.

LastNCof2022 · 23/11/2022 21:07

@CombatBarbie that sounds interesting. Do you have a link to how to start the process please?

Combat barbie you mentioned lunar solar on another thread. That isn’t something I was aware was possible since scientists at Stanford only worked out back in April of this year how to get energy from panels at night and it’s only a tiny amount and it’s through harnessing the heat as they cool down in hot climates rather than by using lunar light.
I assumed your comment was a joke. Can you link please?

@CombatBarbie sorry the phone auto corrected your name

We have a 2500 litre tank and we fill it 2.5 - 3 times a year.
We are up on the Pennines and can be cut off with the snow, so make sure we are full before winter sets in.

WhiteCatmas · 24/11/2022 07:30

Child benefit is not listed on that site as one of the eligible benefits.

I think it is but it says it’s income dependent

It is because that's how we got it. Along with half the village. Strangely the private pension pensioners (of which there are many) are not so they are all pissed off.
