Hello,

dumb question, but is my smart meter linked to the property, or can i just take it out and plug it into my new house?

I rememeber the installer did something to main meter but I can't remember what now.

I would have thought it was the suppliers device. Don't really know but if you move wouldn't you just ask the supplier at your new place to fit a smart meter.

Do you mean the in house display, you can't just remove an electric meter

mondaytosunday · 21/11/2022 20:22

My smart meter is the meter - there's no separate device. So I don't think so.

A smart meter is attached to the house, and cannot be removed.

If you mean the in house display thing, yes, you could take it, but I don't know how you'd link it yo the new meters. Does the new house even have smart meters?

WhereYouLeftIt · 21/11/2022 20:29

The 'Smart Meter' is the meter itself - plumbed into the wall and the gas and electricity mains. That ain't going anywhereSmile!

Do you mean the In Home Display? I would think that would be the property of your energy supplier. It might be worth checking their website to see if it's in the FAQs?

No. You never tamper with a meter (smart or not). It's illegal.

You can take the in home display, but it may well be useless in the new property.

The IHD belongs with the meter or the next owner/tenant won't have one, also it may not be compatible with new meter and there should be one already with the meter at the new place. Once the meter gets to a year old the energy companies won't give you a new IHD and you have to buy one if you want one.

The IHD (In Home Device) is linked to the meters, so leave it behind when you move home.
