Where do I shop now?

Looking for advice on where you do your food shopping now that prices have gone up. I’m even finding Asda expensive now, if you can’t rely on them for cheap goods, who can you rely on?

I use local butchers, Poundland, Morrisons and tescos.

LeafHunter · 15/11/2022 13:58

Aldi and Lidl. We have Costco for big purchases like loo roll as have the space to store it.

I make the most of anything with yellow stickers on and meal plan more than I used to.

SugarCookieMonster · 15/11/2022 13:59

Aldi. I used to do a mix of Asda and Tesco (there’s one right across the road). But after spending £100+ a few weeks running I switched. Now it’s between £45-70 depending on what type of week and who will be home.

SpinningFloppa · 15/11/2022 14:00

I use tescos as I only shop online, I’m finding it extremely expensive now.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 15/11/2022 14:02

Lidl for veg and fruit (and stuff like bleach, toilet roll, foil etc). B&M for pasta and tinned toms/soups/beans etc...

I have a local co-op but only tend to use them for reduced stuff (eg loaf of bread, divide into thirds and stick in the freezer).

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 15/11/2022 14:02

Aldi is still cheap! Tesco is murderous without a club card. Juice was £6there on Friday.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 15/11/2022 14:03

@SpinningFloppa if you only shop online, you're always going to pay over the odds.

Winter2020 · 15/11/2022 14:04

@SpinningFloppa
If you have a car and a local Aldi maybe you could do click and collect?

I haven't used it but I saw staff picking orders the other day and their website says that they load your shopping straight into your car boot.

SpinningFloppa · 15/11/2022 14:35

I don’t drive so not easy to lug a weekly shop home on the bus

Skinnermarink · 15/11/2022 14:47

Aldi is not still cheap, maybe for some things, but it’s gone mad on others. Tesco price match it.

I’m lucky as on a Wednesday I just about have time to do the local market for fruit and veg, most things are £1. Tesco online and yellow stickers when I see them for other bits. Lidl for nappies/loo roll/foil etc

Whiskers4 · 15/11/2022 14:50

I use Tescos and Lidl as both are walkable, so no transport costs. I'm trying to keep on top of current prices and buy each item where it's cheaper.

I've also adjusted how I shop, eg shop cake £1.50, but I can buy biscuits for a 50p treat instead. Rarely biy meat now, cheaper cereal choices etc.

SeaThingChild · 15/11/2022 15:02

I'm always surprised by how expensive my bill is when I go to Asda which is my local shop. I don't find Tesco online too bad. Online you can at least sort by lowest price and filter for special offers. And it's easier to see exactly how much it will come to before paying, and then swap things round. Also I stick to my meal plan when I shop online whereas I get too distracted in the shop and end up with extra things. Changing my meal plan to cheaper meals has helped save though. DH picks up stuff at Heron foods and Farm foods which is sometimes worth it.

carefulcalculator · 15/11/2022 15:06

We shop at a greengrocer for veg, get fruit from a local orchard place, then shop in Co-op, M&S, Sainsburys for various different things. We have switched down a lot of items. We already made our own bread etc.

The prices are high but I think because we are vegetarian I am finding it manageable, someone was telling me the price of chicken and I was Shock

I am definitely making moe basic recipes. You can save a bit here and there by usring slightly less of some ingredients (e.g. peppers in a curry - used to put in three, would now put in two).

WalkingOnSonshine · 15/11/2022 15:13

Once we’ve cleared the freezer, we’re going to buy meat in bulk from an online butcher. £50 should do us for the month.

I’m then going to do an online delivery every two weeks and top up from Aldi in between.

I buy all laundry and toiletries in bulk separately, so a typically week for 2 adults and 1 child is currently £45-50, and I reckon I can get it down to £35-40.

DoNutSweatTheSmallStuff · 15/11/2022 15:17

Overall, Aldi is the cheapest.
I very rarely shop anywhere else.

TurtleTriplets · 15/11/2022 15:33

Aldi is cheapest but even their prices have shot up. I have gone from paying £80-£90 a week to spending £120-£130 and we aren't buying alcohol or nappies or anything that you would expect to push the cost up!

Always4Brenner · 15/11/2022 15:36

Tescos am loving it. The club card is fantastic very happy especially with the bigger shops online.

PeloFondo · 15/11/2022 15:43

I use Aldi and occasionally Tesco or Sainsburys
Morrisons has gone so expensive and that used to be a cheap shop for me

PieonaBarm · 15/11/2022 15:51

Asda has gone expensive since they introduced their rewards app. For example, Heinz Snapot Beans (yes I know they're expensive anyway) £3, £2.49 in Tesco and Aldi. Knorr Stockpots were 70p more in Asda than Tesco the other week. I do buy own brands but there's some branded stuff I like and I check online before I go to see where's cheapest.

Psychgrad · 15/11/2022 16:30

So seems I need to go to Aldi more, I don’t have one nearby and don’t drive but there is a lidl a bus ride away. I never meal plan but perhaps I will start doing so. Anyone have any website recommendations for meal planning on a budget?
I do enjoy online shopping as I can choose items from low to high price.

I love Lidl for their wonky veg boxes. £1.50 and totally random but there’s usually potatoes, onions and apples and whatever else is a bonus. Our last one had lots of oranges, a couple of leeks, big bag of mushrooms, a few peppers, new potatoes and carrots. All for £1.50.
