I mean i knew it was going up. I knew we were on a fixed rate. Im frugal, always have been. Am always in credit on energy bills as o overpay. But I've found last years prices and am in shock.

Electricity..this yr 34p p/kwh
last yr 16p p/kwh [ standing charge this yr 51p per day last yr 23p per day]

Gas.. this yr 10p p/kwr last yr 2.6p p/kwh (!!!!!!) [Standing charge roughly the same]

No wonder i feel poor. How on earth do we cope? Im in Scotland, its mild tonight but has been cold and damp for ages. Ive taken all the tips on board.

But this is terrifying. Along with everything else.

I don't understand how people 'can't understand electricity bills' unless they have significant additional needs. It's primary school maths and the calculation is shown on the bill.

Surely most people can understand that if an item they buy thousands of every year has increased in price from 15 p to 35 p then the cost of a year's worth of that item will more than double?

Or there are calculators on Moneysavingexpert.com where it does the working out for you.

I've noticed the biggest difference on oil - was 42p and recently 74p this September for 1000 litres. Unfortunately didn't have room for even 500l min order when it was pandemic 20p.
Electricity we've been fortunate with solar this summer, and that's heated our hot water too, still getting enough (in South) to heat the water by day, I've only had it heated by oil a couple of times when the family have used all the hot water! We've been careful on use and turning off things left on, so our usage is down by around 1/3 over the past year.
All in all our FIT payments have still covered the total spend on power.

If the war stops in Ukraine surely that will help at some stage?

Yep our bill for August 2022 was what it was in Jan 2021. So basically our old depths of winter bill is our new height of summer bill

Yes, because if Putin loses and goes home with his tail between his legs, we can bank on him freely sharing all his gas with the rest of Europe again can't we?

I think its totally understandable to say whilst everyone knows prices have rocketed when you actually sit and look at it in black and white its still a shock. In my case I'd been paying £90-120 a month for years, always getting a decent fix. I thought £120 was astronomical and i only paid this in winter. Then around summertime i was offered a 2 year fix at £220. I actually laughed out loud, id never seen anything so ridiculous. I was sure it would come down. But of course its only increased and i should have taken it. But i genuinely couldn't get my head round paying £220 for 2 YEARS!!!

Which seems decent now...
