I spent £6 yesterday on gas and electricity. I had a high usage day as needed to do a fair bit of washing etc. I used the washing machine twice the tumble dryer twice. The dishwasher, the oven for half an hr. I also used the hoover, had a shower and my ds used his xbox for 2 hours. I also had the heating on for about 3hrs. Today I've spent about £2.50 and will put the heating on for an 1 or 2 hrs before bed. I can't sleep with the heating. So I expect my usage to be about £4 today. Long gone are the days of having heating on all day. I dread to think how cold it will get soon.

Where do you all live with frosts and 13 degrees inside? Genuinely asking. I came home at just past 1am last night and it was 12 degrees outside, house this am (inside) is 19 degrees and heating isn't on still. Am I in a little micro climate? We are by the sea maybe that helps

South Yorkshire and its currently 11⁰ outside. I've no heating on and the house is 14⁰ everywhere except the lounge where the fire is on so its 17⁰ now after being on since 11!

WhatsitWiggle · 05/11/2022 16:41

@cantheydothisreally do you need all 16 rads on for those hours? If not, I'd recommend looking at a smart radiator system. TRVs on the rads just set the temperature, a smart TRV controls the time too.

merlotlover · 05/11/2022 18:04

I'm sure when we got our smart meter the guy told me that the gas price is late (such as like a few hours ago) and the electric is pretty much bang on time wise
Maybe it's from last evenings usage

PottyDottyDotPot · 05/11/2022 18:08

Do you have a separate thermostat upstairs, I do and I usually have mine set low so the radiators don’t come on during the day?

crazy4cats · 05/11/2022 19:51

well after 2 hours heating this morning, 3 washes (1 long and 2 quick hour long cycles at 40, our machine doesn't have a 30 setting) and 2 tumble drys (too much rain for the washing line and we still have a clothes horse full in the airing cupboard) we are on £9.00- so will probably get to £10 by midnight.

It's a lot but in fairness I wouldn't normally do 3 washes in one day and this is the first time the tumble dryer has been on since last winter. I did think it would be a bit higher

Foolish move getting a smart meter

@hotdiggetydog What do mean by that? Not being arsey, I just genuinely want to know why you said that. As I think my energy got more expensive after I got the smart meter and that was about 18 month before the price rises.

NewBootsAndRanty · 05/11/2022 20:03

I'm using about £1.70-£2 of gas a day at the moment, 6 radiators in a 1 bed flat.
Heating's usually on around 4/5pm to midnight/whenever I go to bed (I'm a night owl).
I've just nudged it up to 19° this evening compared to the usual 18°, will see how much extra ££ that is..

Yep, sorry, wasn't being arsey either. :-)

It's teeing up for a situation whereby they can charge for peak and off peak consumption.

Older style meters can't do that.

There's a reason why companies install them for free and push so hard for it, and it's not to benefit the customer.

Maddison12 · 05/11/2022 20:39

@hotdiggetydog Yeah I'm starting to realise why they pushed so hard for it! Someone told me not to change from the old style meters, I thought it was just conspiracy theory type rubbish though.

I actually asked them if I could change back after I suspected they'd put my prices up, but of course once you switch over you can't switch back again! I should have known 🙄

We have Hive and individual thermostats on each radiator. I upped the thermostat to 16.5⁰ yesterday during the day (it's normally on 15⁰ during the day) Individual room thermostats were no more than 18⁰ (bedrooms lower) Heating was on for 3 hours 39 minutes in total and we spent £7 on gas 😱 That included 28p of the standing charge, using the gas oven for about 30 minutes and two short showers.

I'm comparison, in the summer with no heating on we were spending no more than 75p.

Total spent including electricity yesterday was £10.69. Honestly don't know what we are going to do when it gets colder 🥶😥

That is horrific!!

I'm dreading the proper cold weather arriving, I can cope with low temperatures but the boyfriend is a bit nesh.

This is why I don’t have a smart meter

was advised not to have one By someone

Caspianberg · 06/11/2022 11:05

Those with a smart meters can now benefit from government payback schemes by using less during peak times. If there’s a lack of power, those with no smart meter will loose electricity longer as they can only be on and off, not reduced.
They are beneficial not a hindrance

cantheydothisreally · 06/11/2022 11:07

caspianberg

I have seen this on a recent news story but cannot seem to find anything about it

Do you know any more?😊

@cantheydothisreally - it will depend on who your provider is. This is octopus scheme as example.

We had smart meters in our old house. Haven’t got them in the new house and despite prices going up twice since we moved we are not using as much gas or electric unit wise so our prices are the same so far.

was at a family members yesterday no washing, no oven as cold dinner but did have the heating on they used £11 in a day.
