October Energy Bills, how did you do?

Well I ran around doing all sorts to try and reduce our consumption but only saved 40kwh over the whole month! However, I see looking back over this year we have slowly reduced it by closer to maybe 100-120kwh a month. I got a clothes heated airer and cut the dishwasher use by 2 cycles a week, 4 min showers etc We rent and I think the fridge is using more than usual because it’s got a taped up seal and iced up a bit in summer… Can’t get to the plug to attach our gadget to check the energy usage. There’s only 3 of us in the house.

Our bill with Eon after govt help is £115, it’s been around £130-140 a month for awhile. So I feel that because we saved that 40kwh we have reduced our bill from the £200 expected and now make a profit from what the govt gave us? I would normally donate it but if we don’t get help next year, I should probably save it.

How did everyone else do?

September 17th to October 17th £122 for both gas and electricity...less £66 from government so £56 in total. No heating on, no use of tumbledryer. Showering at gym/ work 4 times a week. Airfryer instead of oven.
I'm interested to see Nov 17th bill....we've had heating on about 6 hours this month.
£850 in credit.

RoseBucket · 04/11/2022 16:39

Mine is Bulb but due to the acquisition it’s moving to Octopus, my energy cost 1p this month.

I’m actually feeling the cold now. That’s all without heating! We have an oil tank for heating and hot water. Gas hob. Electric everything else, so our Eon is just electric. Have only just used heating for 1 hour yesterday, as the 1,000 litre oil delivery cost us £830 + VAT.

£163 for both - very expensive compared to what I used to pay but quietly pleased it’s not over £200! Forecast for December is something like £300!

BeyondThinkOfTheOptics · 04/11/2022 17:04

£153.95 according to my eon app
268kwh electric and 152kwh of gas

Athenen0ctua · 04/11/2022 17:07

£60, so -£6 with the government help

HayleyBean · 04/11/2022 17:11

227kwH in electric and 90kwH in gas which is £93.84 - currently in credit by £734

WahineToa · 04/11/2022 17:24

Not too badly, with the £66 off it was £63.56, so more than 50% paid for.

Its dropping much colder in the mornings and evenings now though.

£85 total. Ovo gave us a bank refund it hasn’t affected the bill just money in our pockets but the DD recommendation seems to be higher each month . Did use less energy than last October especially in Gas.

Dougieowner · 04/11/2022 17:54

Electric £62 and gas £22 (inc. standing charge).
Up a little on Sept but that is only to be expected. Heating came on a couple of times but it was a very mild month and the house very snug.
Will be interesting to see what happens in Nov.

Only moved in Feb this year (4-bed detached newbuild) so have nothing to compare from previous years.

WahineToa · 04/11/2022 18:10

Yes I think November will be quite different for us but mostly with heating, which we have oil for- hopefully lasts till feb. We have the chimney sweep coming on Monday and wood in the shed.

£120 altogether that's without the heating on , that's about £20 more than usual thou as there was 4 of us for half the month as opposed to 3.

Singleandproud · 04/11/2022 18:18

£70 for both (£4 after govt help) , 2 bed flat 1 adult + 1 teen, not using the tumble dryer, have been drying on an airer since May. No heating in October as it wasn't cold here.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 04/11/2022 18:30

Single person in a well-insulated flat. Bill on 4th October was £20, which was for two weeks really as I was on holiday for the other two weeks. Which left my account £40 in credit. Latest electricity bill today was £47 so I now have a £58 credit balance. I have a gas boiler which I have only used for hot water so far. Crossing my fingers that the quarterly bill from BG will be reasonable and affordable, if not I’ll be tempted to plug in my electric fan-heater to use up my credit

ifonly4 · 04/11/2022 19:59

It's been milder this year which has helped, but also tried to be careful with usage.

October 2021 500 gas and electric units - cost £56.92
October 2022 used 447 gas and electric units £91.28

Dec-Feb is going to be the months to really watch.

WahineToa · 04/11/2022 20:02

@ifonly4 gosh that’s quite the comparison. Yes I’m more worried about January and I guess later in December it starts to get cold and show where I am

OP posts:
Dolares · 04/11/2022 21:26

We used 138kwh of electricity and 282kwh of gas during October.

Compared to October 2021:
175kwh electricity and 694 kwh of gas.

October this year was milder so no heating and we've had a new boiler fitted since that 2021 figure so assuming our system works more efficiently.

WahineToa · 04/11/2022 21:28

Wow that’s a big difference in gas isn’t it? It definitely was a lot milder this month.

Yes, I'm beginning to see how shit our old boiler was. It completely packed in last November. We're in Scotland so do have the colder weather more often. Lets see what November brings us!
