Yikes! A couple of years ago we were paying £130, then it went up to over £200. We gave a reading in Oct and our bill today has been £386! My husband nearly fainted when he saw it! Are you all seeing such big increases?! What should we do to reduce this?

You should get a 66 quid rebate from them in the next week or so (the £400 gov help) Try and use less power though. Lots of tips on here.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/11/2022 10:04

It's gone up quite a bit more than that. The electricity unit rate has more than doubled in a year and the gas rate has more than tripled, the standing charges have gone up a lot too. So a 100-200% increase although YMMV depending on what percentage the £400 is of your bill. Plus possibly more to follow when the government protection ends in April.

The only way to reduce what you pay is to use a lot less than you were before, or hope the wholesale prices reduce so the prices go back down.

I’ve hardly used my heating at all, only done two tumble loads since last winter and three weeks energy with octopus was £190. It used to be that in January when the heating was on all day!

it’s a joke.

1000yellowdaisies · 01/11/2022 20:20

Just posted a similar thread... mine has gone up massively for Nov, i feel really worried. Everyone is saying cut back on energy usage but ive cut back so much i can't cut back anymore :(

Fiddlersgreen · 01/11/2022 20:26

Yep. Also with EDF.
was paying £150 a month about 18 months ago then up to £225 and now £334!

haveyourcakeandeatit · 01/11/2022 20:41

My mums with EDF and hers has gone up to £394, she lives alone in a 3 bed house! Shes uses a tonne of electricity but she refuses to have a smart meter.

Same. Haven't turned on heating yet, and I haven't used tumble dryer in months. Have cut down oven use and nothing is left on standby. Using between £40 and £50 a week and paying £300 a month. It was £120 last year and we had heating on all day and used tumble dryer for 4-6 loads a week.

Since we lost our fixed deal, I've been cutting back. Determined not to pay any more than £300 a month this year. So far, we're not suffering - I'd like the heating on, but we're layering up, and using Oodies or throws in the evenings. Washing is drying outside and then on airer.

nannynick · 01/11/2022 21:12

Not yet but I am expecting it. I am on a fixed rate deal which ends in February. I am expecting it to double, maybe even go higher than that.

crossstitchingnana · 01/11/2022 21:29

Energy bills vary enormously. I have my heating on, not worrying about using oven and making only a few changes (like turned thermostat down.)

My dd is £156 (including government £400) for a 3 bed with five adults in it.

crossstitchingnana · 01/11/2022 21:30

Oh and I am on a fixed deal, started this April.

PerfectPrepPrincess · 01/11/2022 21:34

Crikey. We're with EDF. 4 Bed £119 pm direct debit fixed until Mar 2024. But they're giving us the £66 straight into our bank account.

User65412 · 01/11/2022 21:39

Is that what you actually used or just your direct debit? Our has gone from £80 (fixed rate, pre increase) to £260, but we're 'only' actually using £150. It took a couple of months to see this though and I'll now be requesting a dd reduction!

PerfectPrepPrincess · 01/11/2022 21:42

@User65412 well its been a solid £119 for months no change...must admit I've not been looking at our actual account... but fixed is fixed...it started at £80 then got revised upwards I think a year plus ago?!

converseandjeans · 01/11/2022 21:47

Yes it was £110 combined and has gone up to £370. Rebate is £66 so just over £300. Trying to use less but having trouble drying clothes at moment.

goldpendant · 01/11/2022 21:52

Yes, EDF too, £404 per month. 5 bed house. Horrendous!

Meanwhile my public sector pay rise is yet to be agreed and when it is will be approx 2%.

:(

Redambergreenforgo · 01/11/2022 21:59

Have you checked its correct? And worked out what you'll use over the winter? I've worked out I'm using less energy but bill has gone up 50%.
I'm with edf and last month they put my bill up to £270. I'm in credit and not using that much even without any credit. I asked to reduce it they refused to reduce it by the amount wanted but every week I've reduced it by what they've allowed and I'm down to £160 (originally I wanted £150 but happy to get to £160).

altmember · 04/11/2022 00:59

Yes. Just over a year ago my monthly payment was £80, and covering the usage. Then my supplier went bust, and I got put on EDF's standard rate. They only just got round to reviewing my dd last month (morons), but they put it up to £300. Admittedly there is a bit of arrears since they never reviewed the dd amount for so long (my prices jumped about 50% when I went onto the EDF standard rate last Sept).

If you log in to your online EDF account, go to the dd section and you can request a new dd amount (lower, or higher if you really want!). I think they manually review your request before approving it, so you won't get away with reducing it down to £10. But I requested £270 instead of £300 and they were ok with that.

dementedpixie · 04/11/2022 13:27

@gourmetperle do you mean that's what they want your direct debit to be rather than how much energy you actually used?

I've seen a lot of posts about EDF is particular trying to make people pay huge monthly direct debits that are far removed from peoples actual usage.

Purplepepsi · 06/11/2022 21:14

We are paying £230 a month for a 3 bed terrace with EDF but we used less than they thought so they have refunded £450?!!! But also kept the direct debit the same. I guess it's better in my bank account than theirs!! 😂

Snozwanger · 06/11/2022 22:02

We got switched to EDF when our supplier went bust and we are now paying £420 per month for a 4 bed detached house. It's crazy! DH says he's logged in and what they're charging is fair usage (we have a smart meter). I just don't know anyone else in the same size house who is paying anywhere near as much.

DH refuses to reduce the DD now as he says we'll only end up having to pay more over the winter as our usage increases.

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 07/04/2023 12:05

And all the profit from your bills is going to the French Government. I am amazed people still use the company.
