British Gas fixed rate for dual fuel ending on 7/11

After a few months of family stress and bereavements, this could be the straw that breaks the camel's back.
I'm on a fixed rate tariff for dual fuel, with British Gas, it finishes on the 7th of November but despite my online account saying that I'll be put onto another tariff, it doesn't show in pounds and pence what the costs will be.
I know everyone's in the same boat, struggling to understand what to do, but I honestly feel like I don't have anymore headspace to deal with this. Can someone take pity and my hand and talk me through what to do?

In short, do nothing. No fixed tariff will be cheaper than the standard rate at the moment.

If you want to k ow how much it will cost you once your tariff is finished, find your annual kwh usage on your bill and x this by the standard tariff prices then devide by 12. This will roughly be your new dd amount.

You don’t need to do anything as such.
You will automatically be transferred to the the Standard Variable rate, details of the unit charges etc are on the website.

If you pay your bill by a fixed DD they will let you know the new figure, although you could calculate this yourself as the previous poster says.

If you pay by variable DD you don’t need to do anything, other than keeping an eye on your consumption so there are no nasty surprises when it comes to paying the bill.

Moneysaving Expert have a calculator

www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/lower-energy-direct-debits/#calc

However, it doesn't include any debt or credit on your account and I'm not sure if it accounts for the £400 credit over the next 6 months.

It also assumes that you'll be paying the current standard amount for the next year as unfortunately we don't know yet if the government is going to give people extra help from April (they previously announced a 2 year price freeze, but this has been shortened to 6 months, but we will also have a new budget some time soon, so things may change again).

Be warned, the unit price of electricity could have doubled since your last fix, and your gas tripled, plus the standing charge is higher, but how this translates into what you pay will depend on what extra help you're entitled to. If you're on UC, other benefits or are above pension age, have a look at the MSE Cost of Living help section as it will cover extra benefits/help/grants that you may be entitled to.

I don't think you can fix now. Just stay on variable rate, it's the cheapest possible option at the moment. You'll be fine. So sorry you're having hard time x

Thanks all. I don't even know if it's a fixed or variable rate they're planning on moving me onto. That webpage just has an "oops" message flashing.

It's probably the standard variable rate. Things are probably too unpredictable for them to offer fixed rates right now without them being ludicrously expensive, so no-one in their right mind would take them up on the offer, and if they did, they'd be at risk of a misselling/exploiting the vulnerable complaint.

dementedpixie · 31/10/2022 20:37

You will go onto the standard variable rate. I doubt any companies are offering fixed rates just now.

The current SVR is around:

34p/kwh and 49.02p/day standing charge for Electricity

10.3p/kwh and 26.84p/day standing charge for Gas

Justmuddlingalong · 31/10/2022 21:37

Thanks. That's making sense now. The malfunctioning British Gas website seems to be mocking me in my delicate state, so I'm really grateful for you all taking the time to explain it. I'm normally quite an intelligent, on the ball person, but lately...

There are basically no fixed rates available so I agree with PPs that you will go into SVR. If it helps, you’ll be on the same tariff as the vast majority of the rest of the country except
lucky people on historic long-term fixes, and there’s no bargains to be had so you are spared the mental effort of wondering whether to shop around etc.
