Social supermarkets

Just wondering if people realise who social supermarkets are for? Our local one is saying people don't use it because they're not on benefits or feel they can't take the food away from other people in worse situations.
You need to register, but anyone can do this, no rules, and the more people use the place, the more money they make to spend on food parcels for those that need.
I didn't realise this. Worth checking with any social supermarkets near by to you.

Also known as Community Shop or Community Supermarket.

Some of them do ask for you to be on a low income, maybe it depends

I do think it's a shame if a lot of people, who would benefit from using them, won't, because they don't realise the above though. Definitely worth asking.

Not only are you making life better for yourself, you are also helping the ones who need extra food parcels.

Is this the same as Food Clubs?

Cattytabby · 18/10/2022 18:46

I think food clubs are similar . Things will be called by different names in different areas. I just googled and it came up in search of 'community supermarket near me'.
There's so many people worrying about finances at the moment, I just wanted to try to get this info out there.

I have googled and nothing coming up near me - are they quite few and far between?

Cattytabby · 18/10/2022 19:34

I think they are dotted all around. If you can tell me whereabouts you are, I can check for you

We have one, I use it and I donate to it. I tend to go for the perishable items that would end up in landfill otherwise. I signed up because the original criteria was for public se tor workers, low income etc... I think now they encourage everyone as the money raise goes back to local projects and funds a food bank.
