@toogoodforthisworld good topic, it's always useful to get good recommendations... I can recommend always having eggs in the fridge to rustle up quick, cheap and nutritious meals like egg fried rice with veg or chicken in it or a Spanish omelette for something more substantial... remember eggs are the only fast food that's good for you!

I’ll add farmfoods bacon. 3 packs of 16 rashers in each for £7 and it’s good thick stuff too. Lidls plain loaf is better than mothers pride and it’s 50p cheaper. Poundstretchers have their seeds reduced if you fancy growing your own herbs or cress on the windowsill down to 10p a pack.

@HighlandPony love the seeds tip!
I've been quite active on FB marketplace - asking people would they like to have certain plants from garden - and I'd love to swap for a plant that produces food from their garden!
So far I've got raspberry plants. Strawberry plants and a cucumber and a big bowl of apples!

Yes to eggs - and bread, butter, cheese, pasta, rice, salt, pepper and potatoes for quick meals. And coffee and wine, but that's me.

Aldi (and probably Lidl too) for olive oil, balsamic, rapeseed oil and bread flour for being cheaper than Tesco etc.

@CadburyCrunchy
I've been using quite a lot of eggs recently- I've created this poor man's poke bowl as I like to call it
Half a pack of flavored microwave rice -warmed up- then on the cold side of the plate: slices of cucumber/ avocado / tomato and spring onion. Sprinkle over some fresh lemon juice and top with poached eggs and sirachi sauce. It's lovely!! And ready in 10 mins!

@Cynderella definitely Aldi for cheap olive oil! It's cheaper here than in Spain!!
And I buy the organic 2 for £5 ground coffee from asda.. yolo lol
The wine I love it too bloody dear so I've stopped drinking it. Will have to reconsider this decision shortly 😂

The herb and the cress ones are good because even if you don’t have a garden they grow really well on a windowsill in a flat or something. I got cress, chives and spring onion but they had radish and beetroot left too.

£3.80 for 500g.

Downloading the olio app and checking everyday after 6pm and 9pm for surplus food from Tesco and Iceland. I have given away so much fruit, veg, meat, eggs, bread, sandwiches, dessert and birthday cakes this week! I've attached photos from other peoples tesco donations.

@heartbroken22 wow that looks amazing. I have the app but haven't really used it. I did have the TooGoodToGo but it's a bit of a faff to be there at designated 15 mins slot you're provided with 🙈

Never throw stale bread out to the birds.

  • cut into cubes and make croutons
  • whizz in blender/processor to make breadcrumbs - these can be baked a bit and baked again for panko style or mixed with cheese to top lasagnes, mac n cheese etc. Can be used from frozen.
Manky potatoes - boil or steam and mash. Mix with lightly cooked fish for fish cakes (I add grated cheese and use smoked haddock) or veg (quick saute onion, carrot, celery or frozen peas and sweetcorn out of bags). Shape into fish cakes or veg fingers/burgers. Dust in flour to shape, Dip in beaten egg. Coat in breadcrumbs and freeze on a tray until frozen. Then bag up. Cook from frozen in oven or airfryer.

Aldi for mayo/salad cream etc. Their version (Bramwells) is ok and only 79p for a squeeze bottle. Honestly can’t tell the difference in sandwiches etc.

I’m lazy re rice - don’t cook it very often (and I know it’s cheaper in the long run to cook it from scratch). But their pouches of rice are around 40p compared to £1.50+ for Uncle Bens.
