Smart metre already over £1.75 on waking up at 7.30 pm with no heating on

Just that. It's 16 degrees in my house. It's no less bearable at 16 than 19 last week btw but of course I can't keep the heating off forever. I'm going to do two loads of laundry today so it will be interesting to see what it is tonight but I share my standing charge has doubled this week. I must check.

Does the £67 come off your monthly bill or applied as credit to it?

Our smart meter doesn't show the standing charge, I don't think anyway. Sure I read that in the info eon sent us.

Nope. It's an immersion heater so unless I press the boost on the boiler there's no hot water at all as the immersion is off since April. I was just thinking that my parents lived off one wage and we wasn't by any means rich but the house was warm. Now I'm aiming to keep mine cold!

It's only £3.15 now and I'm on my second load of washing, so I suspect the standing charge has gone up again. I'm washing whatever I can on the shortest most economical wash.

Short cycles can often be more expensive - my eco setting takes hours but uses less energy overall.
My old fridge freezer was using almost 2kwh a day (I think it was faulty as it wasn't supposed to use that much); I replaced it for one that uses just over 0.5kwh a day.
It all adds up...

IncessantNameChanger · 15/10/2022 19:06

I looked up my speed cycle and it does use less energy. The more mucky stuff is now on the eco setting but the short one is handy as it uses just a bit less than economy but you can capitalise if the weather turns nice getting stuff on the line. I'm not planning on using my tumble drier either until nessasary. So much faffing about just trying to get through the winter

OP are you on variable rate or fixed?

We were on holiday 2 weeks ago, my adult Son stayed home, went to work daytime, he had takeaways and cooked quick meals. I logged on to see electric usage that had been used and there wasn’t the big difference that I was expecting. He did play Fifa on xbox all night one day, but that’s all, that day was the same amount of electricity as normally used when we are all here. We are with Bulb and I am paying £6 less than I was last month.

We've been away this week. Tv on standby and fridge/freezer running. Our electricity has been £2 per day without us even being here!

Well that will include your daily standing charge.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 16/10/2022 12:21

For comparison I'm with OVO
I'm in a tiny( dark) flat with an LED bulb on all day
My standing charge. 42.29p
kWh is 32.59
I've worked out that a quick wash at 40( 59 mins) costs me 59p
Usage is generally £1.40 per day
OVO are taking my usual DD then refunding the £66 to my bank account.
I'd rather they took it off my DD

I've been meaning to do this, but not got round to it yet, but might help those who are seeing bills that seem very high even when they are not really doing anything. Basically I thought I'd go round and switch off (literally off) everything except the smart metre. And then check that my usage (appreciate there will still be standing charge) is actually zero. If it isn't, I was then intending to play "hunt what's causing the usage".

  • I might leave the fridge/freezer on, though figured it wouldn't hurt to turn it off for a short time and it makes it a better experiment.

(OP - I am posting at 12.30pm and our electricity spend is currently £1.33. And we've had the washing machine and dishwasher on, and been doing "normal" things around the house. We also have 50p on gas but I know that is standing charge and a small amount for hot water earlier. So your £1.75 for nothing seems very - odd).

Pootle40 · 16/10/2022 12:59

I realise that @ThisIsMeToooo but still £2 a day is ridiculous. And this is a very new energy efficient fridge freezer too. It's an example of if you are struggling with these bills then just running a fridge freezer and not even being in your home would cost £60 a month !

But fridges and freezers aren't on all the time. They are controlled by the thermostat. So vary day to day and hour to hour, depending on ambient temp, what you have them set to, how many times you open them, what condition the seals are in, etc etc etc.

Hall84 · 16/10/2022 13:42

Ours always used to be under £1 on waking up and most days this week have been nearly £2. On Wednesday we hit £12 for the day 😱it's always the most expensive as 3 or 4 in the house and I've started to have the heating on a little for my parents. It used to be no more than £6 so everything has doubled

IncessantNameChanger · 16/10/2022 14:18

I can't figure out what is going on at. Last night when it went to zero we had used 6p by 12.15. So by that logic are base usage is 5.76. But I used the washing machine twice and the dishwasher and oven once and it was 5.80 for the day. Today at 2pm its 1.89 So if we carried on just using the radio and one light it should be £3.24 today.

It's all very odd. My teenage is just playing roblox, chatting his mates and watching you tube videos on the PC. Sometimes the gas usage goes up during the day while the oven and boiler is off. Nothing else draws down gas?

We don't notice much difference on waking up. It was 85p-90p at 7am for electricity but now 95p-£1 at same time.

Yes everything is left plugged in on standby

One fridge freezer, one old under counter freezer and a billion other things plugged in never turned off like TVs, teens PC, washing machine and drier etc but I don't think those things draw down much on standby. Or do they? Smart metre is always on but that goes onto standby by itself over night too

When prices started to go up I bought a power board extension thing and plugged all the tv bits into it and we turn it off at the wall when not watching. We have also trained the kids to turn it off when not watching and not sit with the telly on while doing other things. I turn everything not in use off at the wall, the coffee machine, toaster, printer, hob, lamps etc. We are being really carefull to turn stuff off and have made a difference. Games consoles use loads on standby, easily £1 a day and it all adds up.

Have a look at your smart meter, and take note then go a and turn off everything off and see what the difference is.
