Can anyone help me figure out strange meter readings?

I have a bill for combined gas and electricity which is nearly £900D
I turned off the gas boiler in late Spring, so only use gas for the kitchen hob and don't use the electric shower. Other electricity is lights, fan heater (Husband) and computers and fridge freezer.
I knew I had readings somewhere, and found them today. I don't understand the massive difference-is it possible EoN have overriden (is that even possible?) the meters?

I have sent photos of readings for the last 2 months, and I am desparately trying to find a photo reading to prove 1 April figures.😣

It looks like the April 1st readings must be wrong.

NewBootsAndRanty · 08/10/2022 21:17

Did you really use over 1000 kwh from July to August?

What sort of meter is it? Does it have wee clock face duals?

1st of April ones could well have been wrong. Do you have earlier readings?

JellyBeanFactory · 08/10/2022 21:21

Are any estimates or all actual readings?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 08/10/2022 21:21

There is an extraneous '2' in front of your 1 April reading.

21895 should be 1895x

GerronBuzanDoThaWomwok · 08/10/2022 21:24

Sorry, this is turning into a jumble-no, there's no way we could have used those amounts. The readings for 1 April were written in the notebook I use, so I can't believe I misread them? I'm trying to find the photo of the meter to double check.
But I also don't understand the sudden, massive jumps e.g.
1050 E and 2144 G in a heatwave, with no heaters, hot water or central heating at the end of August,

OP posts:
XDownwiththissortofthingX · 08/10/2022 21:26

To be honest, it looks like the second column has a series of reading errors. Remove the 2s

1895x
19543
19651
19715
19760
19x04
19x05
19x09x

Last three figures are anyone's guess, but 19804, 19805, and 19009 would make sense because the 1 solitary unit used is only over a 5 day period

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 08/10/2022 21:27

sorry, 19909 for the last reading, not 19009

You are my hero!!!!!!!!!!!!! How could I have missed that-I still need to find the photo, I think I'm losing the plot.
And pixie and jelly, thank you-it's a normal meter, not dials, and yes-readings I took myself. I only took a photo in April because I was worried about price rises

Ignoring the 1st April reading, electric wiseyour monthly usage breaks down to ..
27 Apr- 26 May 166
27 May - 26 June 161
27 June - 26 July 108
27 July - 28 August 1050
29 August - 30 September 270

Does that seem right?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 08/10/2022 21:35

Just out of curiosity, are your meters smart meters with a digital display?

The reason I ask this, is because with these digital displays unless you are standing squarely in front of the meter and in low light when you take a reading, you can frequently see 'ghost' numbers or partial numbers and take an incorrect reading. It's not common, but it does happen.

If you are off at an angle from the meter, it's up above your head, or the display has a strong light shining on it, I think you may be seeing 'ghosts' on the display and misrecording the reading.

GerronBuzanDoThaWomwok · 08/10/2022 21:36

yes, that does look right, thank you (except I think 148 June-July) but there's no way we used 1050 units in August, I can't imagine what would use so much, and in any event, I'm very careful.

No, they're not smart, just a line of digits. I'll make sure I'm ....facing full on like you suggest 😗

Ok.

I think with your electricity readings you have misrecorded 27th April as 61517 when it should be 61617, I'm at a loss to explain the big jump July to August, and also, they suggest you used 43 Kw/h in the 4-5 days between 29th Aug and 4th Sept, which going by your previous consumption also seems absurdly high, as does your consumption from 4th Sept to 30th Sept.

I suspect you have made a few wee mistakes here and there recording your figures, but all that actually matters for the purpose of calculating how much you owe is that you had an accurate starting figure and an accurate ending figure at the date of billing.

If you are absolutely certain that the figures you are writing down are correct, then I'd ask for someone to come and service your meter because the jump from 61992 to 63042 in the space of a month makes no sense at all. Unless your husband is doing something with electricity that you are unaware of :P

AlmostAJillSandwich · 09/10/2022 01:07

Electric fan heaters eat electric like crazy, how long is your husband using it for?
I used nearly 2000kwh of electric in february thanks to having my 2kw fan heater on a lot.
Also i used it twice on the 1st and 2nd of october, both only for short time periods (no longer than an hour combined but i think a bit less) and my recorded use from when i sent a meter read on sept 28th til again on oct 2nd, i'd used half the ammount of electric in those 5 days as i had for the entire months of july, august etc ant the only thing different was use fo that fan heater.

rurbane · 09/10/2022 01:41

Clutching at straws, but were you on holiday during July and August? Could you have accidentally left something on while you were away?

BeyondsEnergyObsession · 09/10/2022 11:01

I'm with eon too and had a problem with misread meters last year - I wonder if we have the same ones...?

I'd understand if I had done it, but on one occasion it was a meter reader who came into the house who put a 2 in front of my reading by mistake! Took months of overpaying my gas (smart readers that weren't working so they were estimating and I was unaware) before I investigated and found out what it was

SequinsandStilettos · 09/10/2022 11:18

I am with British Gas, and they changed so many bills the last two years online.
What irks is they wrote actual on some July figures when they had not had figures to make that claim.
Their figures were much higher than the current readings. I won't lie - I was massively tempted to inflate the October reading to try and beat them at their own game - given they have already charged me for fuel I haven't used yet and do not allow me to send readings in a bid to force me to a Smart reader I suspect.
As it is, I was honest and submitted the actual (much lower) readings last week. Am awaiting the change-the-bill-entirely online bullshittery and hoping this does not coincide with a reduced direct debit as that will end up screwing me over once Winter bills kick in. Good luck OP.

GerronBuzanDoThaWomwok · 09/10/2022 11:52

Thank you everyone for all of your v. helpful suggestions.
I think the odds are that I've made a couple of mistakes reading the meter, as this seems the most convincing explanation, and also makes sense of the cumulative readings.
But the jumps are something else ! Nothing has been left on as we haven't been away, but the fan heater use (which deserves its own thread 😛) is the only thing I can think of. So that's been confiscated!!!!!! And trying to get suppliers to listen to you is a total nightmare, if I receive one more smiley face email quoting from gov.uk instead of answering my questions, I'll do something unspeakable!
Back to hunting for the elusive photo of the 1 April reading🕵

You need to get to the bottom of what was using so much extra electricity in August.
