£100 grant If you use electricity, but don’t use gas for your heating

I was on the government website looking for information about the Energy Price Guarantee and the Energy Bills Support Scheme and came across the information that if you don’t have gas or electric heating you are entitled to £100 towards the cost of heating.
we have biomass wood pellets which are ridiculously expensive and have increased in price by 45% since January.
Has any one heard about this payment?

Watching with interest as to how they’re going to distribute this £100 (which considering oil has doubled in price, won’t go too far - but it’s better than nothing!)

I personally think they’ll make people apply for it with proof of their non gas status. Unless they do it through council tax perhaps for properties not on the gas grid? Would that information be available to councils? I don’t think they can use the suppliers in the way they’re doing for the electricity £400, as people can use more than one supplier easily.

Anyone else any ideas? They’ve plucked this figure out of the air, but there’s been no mention as to how it will actually be sent to people

I listen to a podcast with Martin Lewis on Nihal's show on BBC 5 Live. Someone asked about this last week. I can't remember what they said, apart from the £100 wasn't enough.

Apparently the government had said that 'people who use sources other than gas or electricity for heating will get help in proportion to the help provided by the price cap reduction' but it was widely agreed that a one off £100 was nowhere near this.

Moneysaving Expert have said they will update the relevant section of their website when it's known how the £100 will be distributed:

www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/cheap-heating-oil/

So somewhere else to keep an eye on, along with other ideas for possible help with the cost of oil, but people have probably already thought of like buying clubs, shopping around and buying out of season.

I wonder why this hasn’t been made more public?

Probably because those of us who don't live in towns or cities are not worth bothering about. Apparently. 🙄

unsync · 07/10/2022 10:11

@BarbaraofSeville all the buying clubs round my way have closed as the price is too volatile.

rageapplied · 07/10/2022 10:13

All summer my supplier had a 300lt cap on orders due to supply issues. So there was no cheap oil available if you could afford to fill the tank.

Rutland2022 · 07/10/2022 10:13

It was in the mini statement but it hasn’t been rolled out yet.
We are on oil and our MP confirmed we will get it (most homes here aren’t on gas) but they haven’t said how yet. We held off on our oil order to see if we would get details in case there was something you had to do. But it isn’t means tested, it’s a universal £100.

Martin Lewis has been covering this and will update site as info on how to apply has been released. It was announced just after queens funeral. Seems on the low side for comparative help but every little helps. I just paid £760 for 800l of oil. Which is painful. Hoping to eek it out with wood stoves and just have a quick blast in the morning so we don’t get up to a fridge.

Placemarking

Another promise that they can't deliver.

coldandverytired · 07/10/2022 10:23

interesting... here in rural Wales it will cover the majority of properties, but I wonder if the many 2nd home owners will also get it...

Alexandra2001 · 07/10/2022 10:31

More universal support for (many) people who don't need it.

The majority in the country can afford more expensive energy & yet the people who really can't afford it, will still see bills (on average) double.

CombatBarbie · 07/10/2022 10:38

I know about this, we are off gas grid and use oil. Just waiting for the update on how to claim. The price of oil fuel has doubled so its not going to be as effective as the electricity payment but I guess every little helps.

Can they afford it though? Rural poverty is an increasing problem. Cost of living increases are often higher in rural communities due to a lack of public transport/ less competition in food supply, old buildings which are energy inefficient.

The cost of oil has pretty much doubled. I don't think it's unfair to say if they are subsidising gas users we should also be helped.

But thats the point, the UK is spending (or rather borrowing) more money than any other european country on energy subsidy.

Yet UK has the highest average bill increases... we need targeted support, giving more money to low paid/or low income and less money to the well off.

Thats what many other countries are doing and hence borrowing far less and what happens in 18 months when gas prices are still super high? borrow another 150 billion?

I very much hope this wasteful scheme is scrapped.

We are also on heating oil with no gas supplied to our village (I did enquire a few years ago how much it would cost to hook up the village if all households were in agreement - about 20 in total - £350k+, so I'm not pursuing it!).

We've had the £400 deducted from our DDs over the next few months by our electricity provider, so if we also got a payment towards oil, would we then be benefitted more than those on gas? That doesn't seem right.

This will be because the price of oil can't be capped.....

EmmaStone · 08/10/2022 13:12

Of course, I hadn't joined the dots.

toobusytothink · 19/11/2022 08:06

Still no more info on this. In Ireland they have increased it to £200. But oil providers websites in England still keep saying they will update when they know more …

Muffinbutton · 19/11/2022 08:09

It was upped to £200 in UK too in this week's budget.

toobusytothink · 19/11/2022 08:45

Oh thank you. I missed that. Still no idea how to claim though …
