Tried the tumble drier

So I just used the tumble drier for the first time since c. March. We are on the price cap. There wasn't anything heavy in it (aka jeans) but did sheets, t shirts, underwear, socks, pair of joggers, pjs. Took about 75 minutes, cost c. 60p and used c. 1.8kwh. It has a drying sensor on it and is B rated for energy.

I had my heated aired on for about 8/9 hours yesterday for a similar load and it didn't dry everything in that time so to be honest I will probably stick to the tumble 2-3 times a week if I can limit it to that.

I think if it's used sparingly and you can afford and justify it use what ever appliance you like.

Good to know.

I had to give in and drag mine out of storage this morning because I had about 7 loads and the weather just isn’t playing ball.

ill pat myself on the back for not using it since March - but north of Scotland is what it is.

I’ll dry outside when I can - and put off washing stuff when appropriate (eg have plenty of spare sheets/towels) - but realistically it’ll have to be used for the kids.

I'm going to have to use mine this winter, I used it once last week. I've decided I'd rather stop using my dishwasher and still be able to use tumble dryer sparingly

aliceinshackles · 05/10/2022 14:47

Just purchased a new dryer. It's bloody huge compared to my old one.
It fits 2 loads in at same time and had rapid 45 min dry.
Used the eco setting yesterday and took longer and clothes weren't dry.
We are a family of 3 adults so not much washing.
I actually fitted all the bedding from a double & king and it dried!
Money wise, I can't tell yet as washer was on at same time.
Will check on next load.

Agreed. Good point.

I've emptied and defrosted the "spare" freezer in the garage, which will apparently save £150 pa (although rates have gone up since i did that calculation). Occasional use of the tumble dryer seems like a bargain in comparison.

Orangesare · 05/10/2022 14:55

It’s cheaper than taking it to the laundrette to dry it.
I generally aim to only use my tumble drier for bedding and towels in the winter.
i extra spin everything, a spinner that does 2800rpm is great (it is a bit of extra work) then either washing line or drier.

How can it be, if OP has done a load for 60p?

Sorry, read that completely wrong, you are of course correct.

My candy condenser dryer costs about 50-60p per hour according to my smart meter. I only tend to use it for pjs, pants, socks and things like that. All the little things that I don't want hanging around the house drying and it takes about an hour so I'm happy with that tbh.

Rapunzel22 · 07/10/2022 10:16

Used mine yesterday for towels and it was about 50p.

Bedsheets4knickers · 07/10/2022 14:54

I'd 💯 rather use it instead of our dishwasher .

RelativePitch · 07/10/2022 15:26

I have a vented tumble dryer. It's very powerful and very thirsty, but the day before yesterday I put it on the super hot setting for quite a large load for 20 minutes. Those 20 minutes cost 35p, but the load was 80% dry. Just hung the clothes out on an airer in utility room to finish it off. Still trying to follow the weather forecast for outside drying where possible. Have used tumble dryer 5 times since April.

ToooOldForThis · 07/10/2022 15:28

How are you all calculating how much it costs to run?

RelativePitch · 07/10/2022 15:32

Looked at smart display before and after. In that 20 minutes, 37 pence of electricity was used. You can see the numbers go up rapidly in a way that they never do with just normal use. 2 pence I guess fridge and freezer being on, 35 pence for tumble dryer.

ToooOldForThis · 07/10/2022 15:33

Thank you!

BMW6 · 09/10/2022 10:50

I am surprised at the length of time posters are saying their dryers take.

My vented dryer only takes about 35 mins to dry heavy stuff like jeans. Cottons are dry in 10.

Last year it was used twice a week in winter and on occasional rainy days in summer, and my total electric useage was 1849 kWh.

Aquamarine1029 · 09/10/2022 10:53

Put a clean, dry towel in with each load and they'll dry even faster.

I hadn't used mine since about April. Went to use it the other day and everything came out smelling mouldy.
The condenser was covered in mouldy fluff! Took me ages to get the smell out.
