15 min Shower cost?

How much does your shower cost under the new unit cap?

I just had a shower with a hair treatment. I am usually a lot quicker. It cost 27p. Not too bad but if the theee of us in the house did the same we are pushing £90 a day. Usually we were spending about 1p a minute.

The central heating I put on flr an hour yesterday and it was just over £1.

How much would your shower cost for 15 mins?

Assume £90 a day is a typo?!

frozendaisy · 02/10/2022 11:01

Yep everything is about triple to what is used to be.

Violashift · 02/10/2022 11:02

Yes cat was climbing on me. Yes 90p

I know just wondering how much showers were costing others as we just had a new boiler fitted.

I never costed energy consumption before because it was £110 per month for a family of 4, slightly higher than average consumption so it didn't matter. We have a normal, not power, electric shower and a through gas heated one as well. So not sure which is cheaper as the gas heated is lovely and you want to spend longer in there.

Hugasauras · 02/10/2022 13:41

Gas-powered showers are much cheaper than electric.

GoldenElephant · 02/10/2022 13:42

I wouldn’t dream of having a 15 minute shower?!

Hugasauras · 02/10/2022 13:46

Ours doesn't cost much for a 15-min shower but can't be precise about it as we have a hot water cylinder so we heat the hot water every day and then it gets used for various things. But a shower doesn't cost much at all.

Electric power showers can be very expensive though as they can be 8-10 KWh so 15 mins in one of those would be 70p+ or something with new rates.

SnoopyNoseTits · 02/10/2022 13:46

my partner has put a little 3 min hourglass in our shower as he will stand in there for ages otherwise! He was shocked by the prices when he looked them up

Wafflesnsniffles · 02/10/2022 13:47

If I recall correctly, a 3 minute shower is what we should be aiming for (assuming no fancy extras such as you mentioned). Obviously if everyone in the household managed that......... and also only had a shower every 2nd or 3rd day instead of every day that would cut costs a lot. Assuming the weather isnt roasting hot or Ive got sweaty or stinky for some other reason a shower 2-3 times a week is fine.

Umm.... confused. So I have a digital electric power shower, but the water comes off the gas heated water tank. The electric is not heating the water, it's just powering it.

I had a 9 minute shower today and it cost 31p

It can end up as meditation under water quite easily ..

CuriousCatfish · 02/10/2022 18:50

I never spend more than 5 minutes in the shower. I'd be bored standing there for 15 minutes.

I don’t know per shower, my family are bathers and it drives me mad. We do have a cylinder though so don’t know how much the bath actually costs

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 02/10/2022 19:01

A 15minute shower is really long! 5 mins is the maximum and even that feels like ages

Wallywobbles · 02/10/2022 20:46

I never liked showers before this summer. I'm in my 50s! Does everyone else also turn it off between rinses? Is this standard practice?

I much prefer baths but will use the shower more, I don't turn it off until I get out.

altmember · 02/10/2022 21:57

My electric shower is 10kW. So it uses 1kWh (unit) every 6 minutes. At the new prices a 15 minute shower is 85p.

ivykaty44 · 02/10/2022 22:01

Turn the water off as your lathering up your body and hair

then rinse

if you’re concerned about cost

sweetkitty · 02/10/2022 22:04

I don’t have a smart meter so can’t work out how much it costs but I timed my shower yesterday as the DDs spend ages in there sometimes 25 mins.

I spent 12 mins and I thought that was a long shower, I’m trying to get the DDs down to 15 mins each!

Trouble with that is it messes up the temperature control on most electric showers. If I turn mine off, and then back on again within a few minutes the water gets scalding hot, then the shower overcompensates and goes full cold for a minute or so, before starting to warm back up. I can soap myself up quicker than the shower takes to settle down again, so it's not worth switching it off.
