Gas isn’t measured in KW on my bill

I’m trying to track how much we’re using daily in kWh for gas and electricity and always trying to lower and get more days than not in the national average (we were quite wasteful and hiiiggghhh over the national average before) but I can’t find what the average usage of gas is in m3 as it is measured on my bill, only the average in kWh
Anyone know what it is?
Also any tips for reducing are of course always welcome! 😊

Yes metres measure in m3. You can use a calculator: www.calculat.org/en/energy-fuel/gas-consumption.html

Or for a rough figure, times it by 11 to get the khw usage!

LionessesRules · 23/09/2022 11:39

As above.
The multiply by 11 (for a metric meter, not an old imperial meter) will get you fairly close.
The actual calculation is dependant on the calorific value of your gas, which changes with time (and temperature, I think).

Hugasauras · 23/09/2022 11:43

Yep! The calorific value does vary slightly but 40 gives a close enough result.

1 m³ gas x 1.02264 (volume correction factor) x (calorific value shown on bill will usually be around 37-40) / 3.6 (convert to kw).
= gas KW/h.

Simple eh? Grin

Thank you! I was struggling with the calculators as all I found either started too high or I couldn’t do a decimal on them, I didn’t know the multiplying by 11 thing so thank you 🙌🏼
Oh gosh I’ve no idea what the calorific value is - why is it all so complicated 🤦🏻‍♀️

Unfortunately this has shown me that we are still using way more than the average household though and I’m not even sure how!
Gah!

How much are you using? What size of house, etc?

MentionItAll · 23/09/2022 11:45

@Hugasauras 🤯🤯🤯

Can you tell I didn’t do very well in maths 😂

House is 3 storey 4 bed semi (extended into the loft so we also have two weird half rooms off the landings which we use as playrooms) 6 people in it, using around 60kwh of gas per day 😟
We probably shower for too long but besides that we only have the heating on for a half hour burst in the morning and I kind of have to cook but surely everyone does that so I’m not sure why it’s so high!

How long have you been putting the heating on n the mornings? And at what temperature (ie is the boiler actually working for 30 mins?).

How is your hot water heated? If you have a newish boiler, can you turn the water temperature down? How often do you heat the tank? Or if you have a combi boiler, can you take the preheat off?

MentionItAll · 23/09/2022 14:36

We’ve only been putting the heating on in the mornings for the last 3 weeks or so, DS gets up at 5ish and it is chilly at that time, I don’t actually know what temperature it heats at, we have a ‘boost’ button that just puts it on for 30 mins so I just press that

We have a combo boiler that is on the eco setting I’m not actually sure what temp it is set at, I have noticed on the gas readings it will randomly be high at 2 & 4am when no one is up and the heating is off, is this the boiler making sure the water temp doesn’t drop too much?

I will have a deeper dive into all these questions when I’m hone thank you
I’ve really never considered any of these things before, just put the heating on if we’re cold, pay the direct debit, don’t ask questions and not really think about it, so being more mindful is all very new to me

We are high users - we used 20,000kwh of gas last year, but even we haven't used 60kwh a day in the last few weeks. We're averaging 10 - 15kwh a day, going up to 20kwh on a 'cooking day'.

Four adults having four 5min showers a day and all cooking by gas - at weekends, I cook a lot, so we can just heat up meals in the week. We haven't put our heating on for months, and I'm trying to hold out until the end of October. This time last year, I'd have had it on this week, but I am resigned to lots of layers, an Oodie and sitting under a throw in the evenings. Our heating is OFF, so not using any gas at night, but I will be making sure that even when we start using it, I will turn it OFF OFF when it's not being used. Like you, I've not bothered with these things before!

I do know that we have a button on our combi boiler that will keep water in pipes hot, so we don't have to wait so long. That's obviously OFF too, but it's something else I've only just checked. I don't think it uses a lot, but it all adds up. We've noticed a drop in our electricity usage since I went on a mission to turn off everything on standby overnight.

Just to give you some perspective I live in a 3 storey 4 bed semi. We currently use about 7kwh a day. We have the hot water come on once in the morning for half hour and cook on gas. In the winter we had he heating on for about 5hrs plus hot water twice and used about 90kwh a day. I'd say something weird may be going on unless you have a lot of long hot showers or wash up etc
