Hot water tank, how long do you have your boiler on for?

Old house had an on demand boiler which was great. New one has a hot water tank from a gas fired boiler, can’t work out how long to have it on for without risking a day or two of no hot water trying to turn it down.
how long do you have your boiler heating the hot water for/how many times per day and how many people?
Also should I time it for when it’s also on for the heating, is that more effacent if it’s firing anyway or should I have it on separately?

15 minutes in the morning provides hot water for my shower, 15 minutes at night provides hot water for DS bath. There's usually enough left over for little bits of washing up etc.

I used 80KwH in August so 2.58KwH per day.

@BettyOBarley my goodness, unless you're all having 4 showers a day, reduce that time!! Flipping heck, British Gas will love you!!!

Our boiler and cylinder are only 8 months old but currently only on for HW a total of c. 3 hours a day

That’s too much

I don’t think “only” and “three hours a day” go together! Three hours a day is a huge amount.

@Milkand2sugarsplease I know! 🙈
After reading this thread I've reduced it to an hour in a morning and an hour in the evening - but I might even reduce further and see how we go..
Strangely though, since reducing it the smart meter hasn't shown any reduction in daily costs...

30 mins in the morning for 2, sometimes 3 showers and day to day use. We do have a dishwasher but will often have flasks/delicate cups/ etc to wash out.

10 mins quick blast at night for evening washing/DC has a 2 minute shower if been exercising.

Occasional extra 10/20 mins in evening if someone fancies a deep hot bath.

Never been a problem.

It may not make much difference having it on one versus two hours if on the additional time it's only kicking in to keep the water to temperature if needed. If on before you get up and start using it I mean.

We have solar hot water and we are using slightly more gas this month despite the timer being set to the same as summer. I assume the boiler was not needing the full 20 minutes to heat up the water in the mornings in summer if the solar had already heated it the day before.

One hour a day - 5 adults - it’s enough for showers and washing up but not enough for the odd bath - kids know to booster the water for an hour for a bath.

ApolloandDaphne · 25/09/2022 11:31

1.5 hours per day in the morning. DH has his shower before the time the water comes on and the water is still hot from the day before. Only two of us in the house and we have showers in the morning plus any washing up we do.

Bigoldmachine · 26/09/2022 12:13

Half an hour in the afternoon. That’s for: washing up (2 adults 2 kids), and baths for the 2 kids (well they use the same water, and still little so not a deep bath, the eldest just adds a bit more hot when she gets in). Shower is electric so not affected.

we’ve tried to reduce it more - it’s not enough, has to be half an hour to cover the above. Needs to be put on for longer / again if one of the adults wants a bath

littlepeas · 27/09/2022 11:50

I've been experimenting with this. We used to have it on for 2.5 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening - it seemed a bit much so I took the evening off completely and reduced the morning to 2 hours. Five of us shower every day and we haven't run out of hot water yet - the water is still hot in the evening if we shower then too.

I'm going to change the timings slightly to come on at the same time as the heating when we start using that again.

littlepeas · 27/09/2022 11:51

Should say in addition to the above that we never have baths.

I have a digital water and heating thermastate on my airing cuboard wall.
I put my water on timer evening 5 till 8
I can't tell if it's to long or to short
I don't no anything about all this sort of thing. And 6 to 8 in morning
Is it to long?

How many of you are there & how much water do you use? We now have ours on for an hour in the morning & it does 2 showers & a bath or 3 showers, plus any washing up. We used to have it on a lot more, I'm amazed how little we need.

LikeagoddamnVampire · 15/01/2024 13:25

I have a new boiler so very efficient. My water is in for 30 minutes in the morning for 3 (quick) showers (2 adults, one teen). Then 10 minutes in the evening just so it's warm enough for hand washing/face cleaning when we are all home in the evening.

We have a dishwasher so no washing up to do. Also we will usually wash hair at the gym when we shower after exercising.

NewYear24 · 15/01/2024 15:29

An hour and then half an hour. That’s for four adults in most of the day, 4 baths and one shower.
