Feel guilty doing too much housework

Literally torn

Used to hoover daily

Wash sheets weekly

Wash towels every 2-3 days (all have our own)

Now I'm avoiding to try and save energy is a bit bizarre....

Context is all - we vacuum daily because we have cats.

Bedlinen washed every two weeks - could probably make it three.

Towels every couple of weeks. Hand towels every day though. We have small ones, about the size of two face flannels, so you can get lots in a wash load.

My machine is not too bad for energy when it comes to washing. Drying it is another matter.

Someone posted this earlier, which has the cost of each appliance's typical use from October. Vacuuming is pennies, but washing machines are real energy hogs. Wash on as low a temperature as possible and always have a full machine!

Towels can be used for a week, or more, hang them on radiators/bannister/over a door to dry and use again.

Vacuum every other day rather than daily.

Buy a manual carpet sweeper!

Everyone is different, with different budgets and different amounts of time, clearly.

I cannot get my head round the idea of anyone wanting to vacuum daily, but if you do and then you feel bad about it, then why not give it a try just once a week and see how you go from there. You might love having all the spare hours you gain, let alone the electricity (which is what I assume you are worrying about).

I would have thought that having cats would make you vacuum less not more as it is against the law to do so if they are sleeping or would otherwise be disturbed by the noise of The Great Cat Scarer.

Well that's the rule in this house anyway.

Cynderella · 07/09/2022 18:08

Obviously, NOBODY would ever vacuum in a room inhabited by a sleeping cat. But they do spread their hair around in those moments when they don't sleep.

Trick is to get cats to match your carpets or viva versa - I have sandy coloured cats. They can be a bit of a trip hazard. Just need to get some sandy coloured duvet covers with a paw print design….
