To wonder how long the no heating brigade will last when it turns cold?

I’ve been contemplating how much I can reduce the heating and electric throws. It’s chilly here today, sixteen degrees, but grey and drizzly. I’ve lit the wood stove, I do have a cold so maybe I feel more susceptible to chills.

I feel like I’ve fallen at first hurdle. Definitely going to be keeping one warm room in the house so it’s not just really unpleasant for the dc. I’ve recently paid 365 for four cubic metres kiln dried wood but it’s going to cost 1K to fill the oil tank for 1000 litres. Was a third of that last year.

I think it is around 16C inside the house on the evenings here now. We are heating the sitting room with a fan heater, which is blowingvon the clothes rack. So we are warm and dry the clothes at the same time.
We started last week because of the clothes! It is not sunny enough any more to dry the clothes at all, they stayed damp. Otherwise, we could beat the 16C with throws and warm cloth.
So far, getting up in the morning without heating is ok, so we will hold on yet.
Fingers crossed the weather keeps helping us! So far, it has been rather mild here.

I'm certainly not in the no heating brigade. Our heating heating has clicked on a couple of mornings recently and I've promptly turned it off. It's currently 17'C and I have the windows open for fresh air. I am very, very grateful for the warm autumn we're having.

PrincessJanet · 18/11/2022 21:42

It’s 14C without the heating on here. As others have said though it’s drying laundry that means I have to have the heating on. Today cost £4, by far our most expensive yet.

Amboseli · 18/11/2022 23:20

We haven't put the heating on yet. It's definitely getting colder in London. We've got hot water bottles and lots of layers. Was sunny today so the kitchen was nice and warm.

I'm going to hold out until 1st December no matter how cold it gets. We have our boiler in a little room and it's always warm in there so I go and stand in there for a while if I get really cold.

Miss03852 · 19/11/2022 00:47

I’m permanently under my duvet otherwise I’m cold

Greytea · 19/11/2022 06:19

I still haven’t got heating on. It’s not cold at all, though we do have the heated throw on the sofa in the evening now.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 19/11/2022 07:20

11.8 in the bedroom. Today might be the day!

Hallmark1234 · 19/11/2022 07:46

I've got my heating coming on, just for a short time, to take the chill off the house in the morning, but it's off during the day and the thermostat is set for 16 degrees, so it doesn't take long to reach that.

It's not good for you, or the fabric of the house to have no heating at all. The house gets colder and damper and takes longer to warm up when the heating does come on, so it's false economy to not have it on at all.

There's an article on the BBC about what an unheated room does to your body, so a little bit of warmth is worthwhile for your health and that of your property. If you have gas heating, which most of us do, it's still cheaper than electricity, so you might as well warm the whole house with gas, rather than huddle around a small electric heater in one room.

Heating barely been on here, only to dry washing from time to time. House feels chilled and damp. I went to buy refills yesterday of those crystals which we have in little containers in the wardrobes. Struggled to get them, all sold out. Eventually got big refill pack in homebase. I mentioned the shortage to the cashier and assumed all the recent rain was the reason. She said it was more people afraid to put their heating on because of the cost.

I got a load of them in bulk from Amazon, as I've been trying unsuccessfully to buy them for a while.

bloodyeverlastinghell · 22/11/2022 07:49

I’ve really caved. As the house started feeling damp when we had all that rain. I’ve been making everyone wash hair properly at the swimming pool so hopefully saving money on hot water.

bloodyeverlastinghell · 22/11/2022 07:50

I suspect the long term cost of replacing blown lathe and plaster outweighs heating costs. Painful though.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/11/2022 08:34

It was 2 degrees here yesterday😭.

We have a very tiny laundry room. I couldn’t get anything dry so we turned the radiator on in there. Sometimes the heated airer is on too. It’s so warm. I sat on top of the washer for an hour yesterday just to get warm.

l guess the laundry is kind of like a diva

Yes, here too. The balmy 7c we were promised never materialised.

PrincessJanet · 22/11/2022 10:21

Freezing here. I have the laundry timed to come out of the machine after work. I'm actually looking forward to getting home because we'll have the heating and dehumidifier on for a bit this evening.

Miss03852 · 22/11/2022 11:35

So cold 🥶 no matter how many layers I have I’m still so freezing

WeirdPookah · 22/11/2022 13:02

It was no higher than 6 degrees here, pouring with rain and so dark all day yesterday. We put the heating on twice, it dropped to 15 inside and it wasn't nice with a small child off school. Today is sunnier, but cold, but the sunshine makes it a little less miserable!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/11/2022 13:55

It was 5 degrees yesterday and same today and SO cold. We've been switching on the CH now and again but from today it's going on at 5.30-8.30 and then 7-8.30 forget thing. The house is feeling very cold now and needs regular heat.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 23/11/2022 20:32

I have it automatically coming on at 6.30am for half hour and 5pm for an hour. But I have had to boost it for an hour a couple of times in the day.

To be fair, that isnt any different to what I do normally anyway. I really refuse to be freezing in my own house!

I did go into the office today, where I have a small desk heater, and had it on full blast all day. Was glorious!

Goawayangryman · 23/11/2022 23:59

I've got it on for an hour a day morning and evening when the kids are here. Otherwise I've got my cozy log burner running off scrounged wood.

Got to have it on a bit otherwise the house gets bad damp. It's old and uninsulated.

IsJohnReadyToMakeAComeback · 03/09/2022 15:30

I put the heating on three times last winter (down south). Hoping to make it 0 times this winter.

Have blankets, hoodie, slippers and keep warm enough.

@IsJohnReadyToMakeAComeback

(I'd assume it was 'after' a grandparent or uncle who died young)

I haven't been very well this week and the house felt miserable & damp on Monday, so I put the heating on for the first time since last winter (& a cold day in September -just to check it was all working)

now I've broken the seal, I'll put it on 'as & when' until it's consistently cold enough to put it on the timer.

I could keep my body warm instead, but it's nice to be able to move around the house without dressing for a visit to the pole!!

I was also beginning to be concerned I'd cause mould etc.

purpleme12 · 24/11/2022 00:51

I'm interested to know what temperature the house was if you only put your heating on three times last winter!

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 24/11/2022 07:46

Well, after 30 mins on this morning my lounge was only 16c (which is too cold to work in) so I've boosted another half hour. It should stay a decent temp then till after lunch as we're quite well insulated.

Question - does anyone else's hands feel like they're burning when cold? Like my hands can get freezing typing all day, but the sensation is of my backs of my hands burning. It's weird. I use heated gloves to help, but just curious.

Snowpaw · 24/11/2022 10:56

House was 13 degrees this morning when I woke up. After airing out the place and wiping down condensation I put heating on. Now up to 17.2. Working from home under a blanket in the lounge, wearing 3 tops. Will keep it set at 17 while I'm working. I need to concentrate for work and its very hard when cold.

ivykaty44 · 24/11/2022 13:42

Plenty in the car though at 7.15am
