To wonder how long the no heating brigade will last when it turns cold?

I’ve been contemplating how much I can reduce the heating and electric throws. It’s chilly here today, sixteen degrees, but grey and drizzly. I’ve lit the wood stove, I do have a cold so maybe I feel more susceptible to chills.

I feel like I’ve fallen at first hurdle. Definitely going to be keeping one warm room in the house so it’s not just really unpleasant for the dc. I’ve recently paid 365 for four cubic metres kiln dried wood but it’s going to cost 1K to fill the oil tank for 1000 litres. Was a third of that last year.

Sorry, I misunderstood your earlier post to mean there were some occasions when it dropped to 16c - rather then 16c being your maximum.

BruceIsACake · 09/11/2022 14:49

I've caved and turned mine on but significantly lower than usual. I've found 17 degrees is ok with (fake) Oodies but below that felt cold so it's set to keep it at 17 when I'm at home as I WFH. Have a Nest though so it'll sense when I'm out and reduce to eco temp of 12.5

You may consider it bareable but tolerating indoor temperatures like this, even when fit and healthy, can diminish your immune system and leave you vulnerable to respiratory illnesses.

Yes I'm not happy about it either but right now I don't have much choice if I want to feed the kids. I think we really need to replace our condenser boiler and immersion heater but that's not really an option either right now. Having the hearing on is costing me much more than just a few extra pounds a day. It's taking me from just £4 pd to just under £10 pd and if your family income is around £1400 pm you can see how this might be an issue. My son is disabled so I'm not working right now as he is transitioning to secondary next year ( hopefully go back then) and all of his dla is going on tutoring right now because he is illiterate and even very severe need SEN schools don't want a child that can't read or write. So right now that's just life. Hopefully I won't be in this situation next year.

Do we think they will go back to 3p again instead of 9p

plus the sc cripples people

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 09/11/2022 19:20

I had to pop the heating on for 20 mins or so the last couple if evenings. Over 24 hours I'm yet to have needed it on for more than a total of 1hrs 30mins.

I hate being cold. I will use it if I need to, but try to do the minimum.

Artygirlghost · 09/11/2022 19:29

Still warm in London and no need whatsoever for heating. Still wearing tee-shirts indoors.

Really weird actually that it is so mild in November.

Amboseli · 09/11/2022 23:20

Still no heating on here in London. Just put on extra layers and a hat when I feel cold in the evening. Hot water bottle in bed and duvets and blankets on the sofa.

I'm determined to keep going as long as possible, hopefully 1st December.

ivykaty44 · 10/11/2022 10:14

ive just input my gas reading for the week, having now put the heating on for 2 hrs per day - 30 minutes mornings and 90 in the evening at 17 degrees

the difference

63kwh for the previous week £8.40
126kwh for this week £14.51

that includes the daily charge

in comparison to last year on a variable rate, for the same week, same supplier
190kwh for the previous week last November £8.81
317kwh for same dates of November £13.85

So its trebled in price

BeyondThinkOfTheOptics · 10/11/2022 15:07

My thermometer came - so I can now say it is currently 18.2'c in my living room (no heating)

purpleme12 · 10/11/2022 16:07

Ah no wonder you've not had heating on.
I wish our house was naturally that warm

bloodyeverlastinghell · 10/11/2022 16:54

I’ve put electric blankets on the children’s beds. They are really happy with them; went to bed half an hour early. 👍I think I can get away with a bit less heating upstairs if beds are cosy.

OhmygodDont · 10/11/2022 18:12

Ours is still only coming on purely to dry washing now. I’m waiting till it’s nearly bed time then sticking an hour boost on. I’m going to clear out the greenhouse to try drying in there.

OhmygodDont · 10/11/2022 18:12

Children all have at lest one duvet plus two blankets. Some have two duvets if they want them.

CheesenCrackersmm · 10/11/2022 22:37

I still have a couple of windows open for a nice bit of fresh air most evenings until I go to bed. I might have to start putting the heating on next week if the forecast holds true. Nights going down to 8 degrees outside so that might necessitate 30 minutes of heating in the morning.

Loving this mild Autumn through. What with the increased direct debit and £66 payment we were about £100 in the black on last Octobers energy bill.

CheesenCrackersmm · 10/11/2022 22:37

Correction

last months energy bill (Octobers)

Shitfather · 10/11/2022 22:39

Very warm in London. DS asked if I’d switched the hearing on - out home is drafty, has ridiculously high ceilings and is single glazed. No heating yet. Holding out until Jan.

Natsku · 11/11/2022 03:22

Just started checking our electricity usage on our providers website thing, the bill for so far this month is 25 euros so we've cut our electricity usage a lot as the unit price is triple what it used to be but we're still on track for the same bill as summer bills when it was still cheap.
Used a lot of wood though, going to have to go get some more this weekend (luckily we get it for free from relatives)

Sausagedoggy · 11/11/2022 06:40

London here and no central heating needed. It's wierd as I usually feel the cold. I've had the electric fire on for a few minutes occasionally but that's it.

Greytea · 11/11/2022 06:48

I’m in London and it’s pretty warm. We haven’t put any heating on at all and we aren’t cold.

Lampedsomeoiks · 11/11/2022 13:13

I was weakening but today is lovely and mild. Plus the damp has lessened. That is 11 days of November eeked out. Just another few months...

WeirdPookah · 11/11/2022 19:13

The weather is weird, it was 16'c outside according to my car, we have to keep using the dehumidifier and sometimes the tumble dryer, to get washing dry. It's so damp and mild outside.

tigger1001 · 11/11/2022 20:32

Was saying that it was 17 degrees when I was in the car today and apparently it's the mildest night (last night) in November on records (so my teenager told me anyway)

Work have their heating on and I'm seriously struggling as it's boiling - it's warmer in my office than it was in the summer....

mum2jakie · 11/11/2022 20:35

It has been really mild and dry the last couple of days, after what seems like weeks of solid rain. Even managed to get a few loads of washing dry while WFH. It's going to be a mild and dry weekend too which will help. OH really feels the cold though and has been going to bed with a hot water bottle every night!

Natsku · 12/11/2022 10:35

Its ten degrees and sunny outside, feels like spring! (as opposed to feeling like autumn, because it was much colder and now suddenly warmed up so feels more like spring, if you get what I mean). It goes back cold again tomorrow so I'm making the most of it and airing the house out (had to air it out last night too because the fire went wrong and smoke went everywhere, horrible)

Sausagedoggy · 12/11/2022 13:37

I've just hung my sheets out and have the back door open. Bizarrely it's like a lovely spring day here in London.
