To wonder how long the no heating brigade will last when it turns cold?

I’ve been contemplating how much I can reduce the heating and electric throws. It’s chilly here today, sixteen degrees, but grey and drizzly. I’ve lit the wood stove, I do have a cold so maybe I feel more susceptible to chills.

I feel like I’ve fallen at first hurdle. Definitely going to be keeping one warm room in the house so it’s not just really unpleasant for the dc. I’ve recently paid 365 for four cubic metres kiln dried wood but it’s going to cost 1K to fill the oil tank for 1000 litres. Was a third of that last year.

I agree OP. This competitive coldness is tiresome. My worry is for those who cannot afford it at all. But many are just jumping on this and saying ridiculous things, about how 14 degrees is perfectly comfortable. 🙄 We all know that while a few people might find it so, for 90% of people it isn't.

Absolutely agree

It has been down to 14C indoors today and yesterday. Also had laundry to bring in from the garden and air and I’m worried about the fabric of the building. Had the heating on in one room for 20min each day. That was pretty toasty (in the one room) and eased my concerns a bit.

Otherwise we’re in thermals, scarves, fingerless gloves etc.

IncessantNameChanger · 05/11/2022 21:29

Had the tumble dryer on today so it's the beginning of the slippery slope to the fuel being over £5 a day. If I put each load in for 30 minutes it's dry enough to go on the airer. I don't have my washing over my radiators as there's too much of it. We went to a bonfire tonight, that's the first time I have felt toasty in a while.

Natsku · 07/11/2022 12:03

Bedrooms were 15 degrees yesterday (don't even know why the temperature dropped so rapidly considering its warmer outside than it was a few days ago) so caved and heated them overnight (electric radiator in our room set to 19 degrees and oil filled radiator in DS's room set low which kept his room at 18 degrees. DD still prefers to be cold). Been having a horrible constant headache the last couple of days but it miraculously disappeared this morning, perhaps the warmth helped!

GasPanic · 07/11/2022 12:53

House has got down to 14 degrees in the last couple of days.

I have been "testing" the heating :) but I think now it is no longer right to claim that it is being tested anymore.

I still only need the heating on for 1 hour a day. An hour seems to warm the place up from 14 to 18 which is fine.

So this branch of the "no heating brigade" lasted to about November 5th. which I am fairly pleased with.

IncessantNameChanger · 07/11/2022 14:05

Decided that actually 13 was too cold to bare!

Put heating on Sunday and it didn't come on in all of the rooms so have bled the radiators now. Three lots of 30 minute blasts while bleeding the radiators has got the house back in to 17 degrees so I'm going to aim to keep it at 18 for a few weeks then see how cold December is.

Frustrating that it took the smart metre to just under £9 for the day but the change in temp hardly felt noticeable. But I did use the tumble drier too.

Natsku · 07/11/2022 15:47

Tried to stop the house getting so cold today so decided not to let the wood boiler go under 50 degrees - ending up heating it to boiling point with the second fire and panicked, what happens when the water in the boiler boils?! Ran the hot taps for a while and it cooled down below 100 but not before I heard weird noises.

My house is 14 degrees at the moment.

I’m thankful that I’m not in it.

NoWordForFluffy · 07/11/2022 18:00

Our lounge was 14° today. The heating has been on for 3 hours and it's just got to 18°. It'll go off now and we'll see how tomorrow goes!

Lampedsomeoiks · 07/11/2022 18:32

13 degrees in the bedroom last night and I've not given in yet. The worst thing is the damp. It really hit my lungs last night.

TheCatWithGreenEyes · 07/11/2022 18:33

How do you all measure the room temperature? Do you just go off the thermostat and what the heating comes on at? Or use a room thermometer?
My house feels cold but when I turn the heat on it doesn't come on till I go above 18.5 so I usually have it at 20 but then it will turn off after about 45mins to an hour. It's never feels 20. I do live in a new build so good insulation.

Heating thermostat. I don't have it attached to the wall and can move it around. Also an inbuilt thermometer on a digital clock.

I have a mini room thermometer. My sitting room is always the same temperature as the thermostat by the front door, upstairs is warmer even though radiators upstairs are set to either frost or one.

OhmygodDont · 07/11/2022 18:41

I just use the heating thermostat it’s not on the wall so I can move it. Coldest again today was 17.5c and it’s now 18.5c.

It won’t be long till the heating is on here.

NoWordForFluffy · 07/11/2022 18:41

We have clocks with thermometers in.

TheCatWithGreenEyes · 07/11/2022 18:43

Thank you. I've just looked on Amazon and going to try a room thermometer and have a go moving it to different rooms.
I cant believe my house is always 18.5-19 it's freezing.
I've just read the gas meter and now put heat on at 20.5 going to leave for an hour and re check the meter so I can work out the cost for an hour.

EtonMusk · 07/11/2022 18:45

I'm putting mine on, just for a couple of hours, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. I'm not cold, but with all this rain, the house is starting to feel very damp and I can't get any laundry to dry.

Cynderella · 07/11/2022 19:04

End of the road here too. Tumble dryer on for two hours yesterday because it's been raining too much to get anything out on the line this weekend. One airer just not enough. Heating on for an hour and a half this evening, but off now and I'm under blanket on sofa. Such a treat having a non-chilly bathroom.

TheCatWithGreenEyes · 07/11/2022 19:38

I had heating on downstairs (7 radiator) for 1 hr at 20.5 and worked out the cost to be £1.05. Not as bad as I expected

I bought some cheap digital thermometers with humidity levels too off ebay. One upstairs and one downstairs

Curtayne · 07/11/2022 19:44

We have put it on in DCs bedroom but we have all been out of the house at work/nursery today so not had to have it on during the day. Me and DH are snuggled under a duvet in the living room watching TV so not cold to be honest. We are fortunate in that we could afford to have it on but having grown up poor I find it hard to not try everything else first and feel guilty for having it on. Yes I probably need more therapy.

Orangesandlemons77 · 07/11/2022 20:20

Still not on here but we are in the SW and still not that cold here yet. Had some nice fires of an evening though.

CrispsnDips · 07/11/2022 21:07

Not put it on yet..husband has jus informed me the stat says 16 degrees…my hot water bottle is helping 😁

ivykaty44 · 07/11/2022 21:14

we didn't have the heating on over the weekend and it was certainly parky!

did the old dressing gown trick in bed to keep warm whilst reading

its gone back on this morning, 30 minutes in the morning and 90 minutes in the evening at 17 degrees, set to keep the house from dipping under 14 degrees when turned off

Our carbon monoxide monitors are also digital thermometers for some reason so I look at those, though also have some old room thermometers in some of the rooms, and the clock in the lounge has a built in thermometer, and the kitchen a digital inside and out one that were here when we moved in - Finnish houses really like to know how warm it is!!
