Who is good at maths?!!!!

Can I get some help with my calculations? I’m trying to make sure I have understood correctly 🤪

My monthly cost for June, July, August average £16 per month for a tiny studio.

(I pay quarterly)

SSE have said cost of electricity (I don’t have gas) will go up by 45%, standing charge by 8% and VAT?

Current cost:
(3 months at £16 per month) is 48 plus (standing charge) of £25 plus (VAT) of £8 = £81

In October:

45% of £48 = £21.60
£21.60 plus £48 = £69.60

standing charge

8% of £25 = 2 plus £25 = £27

plus VAT say £11

£69.60
£27.00
£11.00

Total : £107.60

Is this correct? Obv VAT is an approximation

So, in October my bill should be £107.60

🧐

Looks ok to me.👍👍

I'm not good at maths, and have few spare brain cells to rub together.

I can however bump!

Nolongerteaching · 01/09/2022 14:27

Thank you both🙂 I have a real blind spot to some things esp when it’s money related. I look so closely at numbers but usually forget some big, crucial part.

I guess it’s in the right ballpark - just don’t want a big surprise this Autumn (and whilst I appreciate the numbers are small compared to others, so is my income).

Something to think about...
Is the October bill for September October and November?

They will be colder so the the bill may be higher. Unless it's already averaged out for summer and winter payments so you've built up a slight credit? We overpay every summer so we go into winter with credit. That gets used up as the bills go up.

carefullycourageous · 01/09/2022 14:46

You need to look back at your usage for last October, and multiply that by the unit charge they are quoting you for this October. You can't really compare June with October IMO.

Nolongerteaching · 01/09/2022 14:48

Hi @picklemewalnuts

yes, that’s a very good point. I’m more worried about my calculations though atm and wanted to check they were correct.

I’m not usually quite so dense but an not well atm and my brain feels like it has left my body🤣 so wanted to run it past some greater minds than mine.

But you are right - these are summer numbers not autumn/winter ones which could be significantly more

You should be looking at the price per kwh and increasing that by 45%. Same with looking at your standing charge and increasing that by 8%.

Your usage in the next few months may be higher than the previous 3 months so its the usage that will determine your monthly costs

SSE should tell you the actual cost per kwh and standing charge

Yes this - I've just gone back through my bills for past year.

Noted down for each month the usage for elec and gas in kWh.

Multiplied each figure by the new cap rates and then added on the new standing charge.

It was horrible Sad but at least we know now

Yes mine was pretty grim reading Sad

I have a nice spreadsheet full of horrible numbers!

Nolongerteaching · 01/09/2022 15:51

@dementedpixie

isn't that the same as I have done, though?

Roughly. It’s not quite so precise but it will give the same rough figure

Out of interest, what is the new figure?

dementedpixie · 01/09/2022 16:08

It would only give the same rough figure if your usage is the same. If you use more it will cost more

Nolongerteaching · 01/09/2022 17:58

@dementedpixie

yes, I get that. You are right that they will be more though (although I might be back at the work office more)
