Has the new variable energy tariff been publicised by any of the energy companies yet?

Nothing from Octopus yet, my supplier.
To be fair to them, they have been incredibly prompt in their communications do far, but nothing on this as yet.

Has anyone got any announcement from their own energy company?

I've seen sone threads where some got details of fixed new deals.

It's the variable rates starting October that I'm interested in. What will a lot of households have to pay.

They know how high they can go, why not just tell us what they decided. They had since Friday to do this and I'm sure they'd have a few scenarios lined up ready to choose before going public.

I'm cynical and don't trust they won't go as high as they can get away with. Yes, maybe it won't cover their true costs, but maybe it would. I suspect they'd try to mitigate a lot of unpaid bills too. At any rate, I don't trust them because it would be impossible to work out how they decide on the new pricing.

And at this point, I don't care how much profit energy suppliers (if much) and energy producers are making.

I simply care about my own household right this moment. I can't be the only one.

I just want to know what my new rates will be so we can budget accordingly for the next 3 months. Then do it all over again in January (apparently).

I'm also with Octopus and they are working out individual prices. Will be around the level shown so you can sort of work out a budget

So pretty much a pound a day before you've used anything at all 😭

Thank you, that's what I was after!
I didn't realise they're still working on it.
Basically double per unit. Give or take.

Let's call it 70p/day so about £20.50/month on standing charges.
Negligible probably, by the time consumption charges show up at the new values.

Thank you @dementedpixie.
There's some sort of timeframe.
We'll wait a few more days, then get the calculator out and last year's bills. With a big dose of trust in our ability to reduce winter usage for this year. Not looking forward to it one bit but needs must.

We are with octopus too. Will they be sending us a fixed rate offer?

Branster · 30/08/2022 22:56

I haven't received a fixed rate offer directly.
I don't know if there is one available in the My Account section?

If you click on Change My Tariff it shows fixed rate offers. I'm not fixing

Fixed rate offers show on the 'change my tariff ' option

JasmineIndigo · 30/08/2022 23:15

Our fixed rate is about to come to an end 😭 So far EDF have not got any more fixed tariffs on offer, I wonder if it's worth getting one when they do or go with the variable rate and try not to use much?

autumnboys · 31/08/2022 07:44

We’ve just fixed with Octopus. I put the figures into the MSE calculator and it strongly advised we did. We use approximately the same KWH of G&E as the price cap is based on, which helps a bit. We’re paying over the odds until January, but I think then it will balance out of the predictions are right. There is no fee for changing deals, so if the Gov does intervene (not convinced they will in any meaningful way) then we can switch.

KonTikki · 31/08/2022 08:21

I'm staying on Standard Variable with EDF while the Global rates, and our own Government work through this.
Interesting noises from the EU to fix rates across the board to lower prices for domestic consumers.
Hopefully we may gain some trickle down advantage if it works. Best we can hope for now, ( Sigh ) !!

Plumpcious · 31/08/2022 11:41

A recent letter from British Gas said they'd be in touch in September with the new rates.

Don't the rates vary by area of the country, not just supplier? So suppliers don't have a single rate for all their customers, which would explain why it takes them longer to work out their rates.

LoveMyPiano · 31/08/2022 11:52

Here I am again with a stupid observation:

It really does feel as though they will adjust rates until, no matter the usage, an "average" household annual cost will be level with the "price cap". That does not even make sense to me.

My costs will be usage in kWh, plus the standing charge. The £ & p per kWh is important, but y usage is the variable that I can control..... And quite WHY there are such increases in the standing charges is a mystery, as the increase are - apparently - driven by the wholesale costs, so the standing charges should hardly be any different. But of course they are - my neighbour who is with BG same as me, has had (previous) increase/s already, and the standing charge is double what my fixed rate standing charge is.... so I do have something of heads up, but my jump in prices will be bigger.

JasmineIndigo · 31/08/2022 14:41

Just got our new monthly estimate from EDF - up to £350 from £200 😭

Apologies for quoting myself - at last! My question was answered on The Money Programme Live today (Radio4) - apparently, the rise in the standing charges is to cover the companies that went bust last year.
Hmmm.

(Although I can see that I have killed the thread as usual.

But maybe someone did wonder; the guy who phoned in did have the same question - and not many people seem to have been asking it.)

dementedpixie · 31/08/2022 17:30

It's been asked on mumsnet and I already knew it was to cover the administration costs of moving all the customers from failed companies. Also covers warm home discounts and other costs.
