Do we think there will be a VAT cut?

I'm looking at purchasing a few more expensive things (logs/heated blankets for example) do we think it is likely VAT will be slashed as a 15% reduction if I wait a week to purchase will add up.

Even if they do cut VAT the chances of retailers passing on the full discount is slim.

Especially on in demand products like heated blankets and airers. Which will be up priced because of demand.

It would benefit us on some stuff we're having next couple of months, and I STILL think it's one of the most stupid ideas and misuses of money possible in response to this as won't help the people who need it where they need it!

Ridcully82 I completely agree but if it is being cut I will make use of it.

I agree. A lot of businesses will probably keep prices the same in an attempt to make more profit, or simply mark time given that they're struggling with their own increases in costs.

Especially restaurants/takeaways etc that are seeing the same increases in energy costs as households. I've seen reports about small takeaways seeing energy bills rise from £10k to £40/50k, which is more than enough to turn a profitable business into one that loses money quite quickly.

Agree - if this cut goes ahead it'll be like the fuel duty cut. The end consumer will see barely any of it.

It's just a way to look like the government are helping the people, when really they are helping businesses boost profits.

It would be expensive and poorly targeted so you'd better hope not as it would be an indicator of catastrophic stupidity on the part of our new leader.

We were planning our wedding when VAT got cut to 15% last time. The venue didn’t pass on the drop, as they said their prices “included the prevailing VAT”. So they would have had to swallow an increase.

We did save a lot of the suppliers where they quoted “£x + VAT” E.g. the photographer, band etc.

So it depends on what you’re buying. A blanket, I don’t think you’ll see the saving. A delivery of logs, yes, ours is quoted with VAT on top of the price.

I'm not sure I see it quite like that. Without business who would employ people? They have to keep going.

Nobel I think it is a dreadful idea, much like EOTHO, so on balance I'm expecting it to happen.
