Electric throws- a false economy or worth it?

Like everyone else I’m trying to find ways to stay warm and keep the heating bills down this winter.

Considering getting electric throws to have on sofas for the evening and then beds at the start of bed time to save on heating but not sure if this really amounts to a saving… would be running 2-3 heated throws to keep us all warm.

Anyone know?
Also any recommendations?

If you’ve landed here looking for electric blankets for the sofa or bed, we’ve recently updated our best electric blanket and best heated throw pages with loads of great options that have been tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Smile

I’ve had mice for 3 years and worry about it breaking as I love it so much

@Branster you plug them in, and they can be washed in the washing machine so pretty safe. Plus the electric flex seems to be quite short, at least it is on my Lakeland one, so no wires all over the place.

I had one but didn't love it - I found it made my legs feel really hot and swollen!

The one we had from Aldi set alight , thankfully my daughter wasn’t asleep at the time .

Coming back to update that my Rab Cirrus gilet arrived and I LOVE it! It's not electric but it's very cosy yet lightweight... Bring on winter!

That with a heatgen top underneath should do it.

Anyone interested... size down, I'm a 14 to 16 and the 16 was mahoosive.

For those wfh, my husband bought what is essentially a heated doormat off amazon last year and regularly sings its praises. Plenty of layers meant he was warm everywhere, but feet stayed freezing.
Once he got the mat he was so much happier, and heating stayed off till evening

if you get a lakeland one it's guaranteed for three years so if it fails within that period you can get your money back. I've recently done that and it was worth it. Meant I bought another from Lakeland, which again I will return within three years if it fails.

Oh another thing is to get the cheap underblanket ones, pop them on for 10 mins before bed and it makes a real difference trying to get to sleep in a cold room! (No need for bedroom heating on).

It also keeps a bed and bedding aired and dry in a cold damp house. We sometimes stay in a 1950s bungalow in the West of Ireland which has no heating except a Raeburn in the kitchen - without electric under-blankets the mattresses and blankets feel clammy and damp, with them the beds are comfortable.

If a blanket alone isn't cosy enough try a hot water bottle or a microwavable heat pad. Cheaper and longer lasting than an electric throw.

Suzi888 · 05/09/2022 20:16

I’ve purchased one as work from home and my Lab hates the heating. I’ve put it on to try it and it was great.

They will cost more like 10p an hour now though.

For anyone looking to buy a heated throw I've just bought 3 (slate grey Oeko-Tex certified fleece too), 1 for myself and for parents. It's the "Beurer cosy heated throw" large size 180cmx130cm and it's made in Germany with a 3 year warranty. Lakeland have on offer at £59.99 but I've just found it at £49.99 at the website stressnomore and if you type in discount code FIRSTORDER you get 20% off so takes it to £39.99 which is fantastic value for a large heated throw with a 3 year warranty to boot. HTH someone!

@Looblou72 thanks for the tip. How do you return it if you need to?

The website says free returns, obviously I presume it means unused!

Oh if you mean under warranty you'd contact stressnomore and they'd replace it!
