Will my heating really cost this much???

Have I done this right? On the new price cap rates

A 24kwh boiler will cost 24x0.15=£3.60 an hour for heating
A 35kwh boiler will cost 35x0.15=£5.25 per hour for heating

I'm not sure what our combi boiler is, but Google leads me to believe that in a 4 bed house it's probably a 35kwh boiler.

I've just ordered some heated throws!

Have you looked at the Which? calculator OP?

Good grief. The which calculator makes Octobers bills practically a bargain in comparison to next year 😱

I've just looked I had to keep rechecking. Absolutely horrific!

It would be better if these calculators allowed you to put your annual usage in, so that those of us currently on a fix can see what horror awaits next year!

What do you think is the lowest you could have a combi boiler hot water set to (no tank). We’re currently at 50 but wondering if 45 would be ok.

You can turn the hot water thermostat on your combi boiler as low as you want. The combi heats water from the mains, so no chance of legionella or whatever. The thing to do is reduce the number of baths you have. Heating hot water is the thing that really costs you, so brief hot showers will save money.

Those with water tanks can turn the thermostat down if they wish, as long as they heat the tank up to 60-70 every week or so and hold it there for an hour. Most systems are set to around 50C and that is 99% certain to kill off legionella in a few hours.

The big issue is insulation. No point in heating any room if the heat's just going to leak out through poorly-fitting window frames, up open chimneys, through the gaps in your beautiful wooden floors. Papier mache in the gaps in the floors, draughty windows sealed, a chimney balloon up the chimney to block the draught. It will all help.

Agree. I'm not on a fix and am who the calculator was designed for but I'm sure my current DD is too high 😂as Eon are clawing back from undercharging for the last 12 months.

It’s very sobering putting in the figures.

NoWordForFluffy · 30/08/2022 21:20

Here is MSE's calculator using usage figures.

pinkyponkyplink · 30/08/2022 22:13

Surely it cannot keep going up?!!!? Cinemas, restaurants, pubs etc will struggle as people won't have the money so surely the govt will have to sort it?!

Childrenofthestones · 31/08/2022 00:55

We are lucky enough to have a multi stove and enough logs to see us through the first year. As a child that was all we had, no central heating and winters were much harsher than we have now. I remember weeks of waking up and scraping ice off of the inside our bedroom window.
I don't know how the millions that only have central heating now will cope. A lot of people who have never really known cold are going to struggle.
Hopefully the next few winters will be mild.

They're using the same predictions that have been published elsewhere. If your direct debit amount now reflects your annual use, then it should be accurate enough. The MSE calculators let you put actual usage in though.
I fixed at higher than the October cap, because based on the predicted rises to price cap next year, I'll pay less overall.

PeloAddict · 31/08/2022 02:28

My gas seems really low. I know I'm quite tight with heating Grin but still.. I use 6321kwh a year

Used 57kwh in the last month, and I have gas for the hob and hot water. I do shower, honestly!

MintJulia · 31/08/2022 02:58

Your boiler doesn't run at full power all the time it is on.

I have a 24kw boiler in a 4 bed house, 2200sq ft. Heating is on 1.5 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening, set at 19 degrees, plus water heating for 30 mins.
My DD has just gone from £150 a month to £230 a month, covering both gas & electric.

No, as they assume you're on the variable rate right now, not a fix. It doesn't take that into account at all.

The MSE calculator is far superior, IMO.

Just saw this Twitter thread by Faisal Islam which seems to suggest Germany, although buying gas at peak prices, have managed to store enough that the later forecast rises my be mitigated a little. Unless I'm misinterpreting this (just waking up)

You can use the calculator here to work out the projected costs. Mine’s going from £145/month to £350 😱

Do you think fixed tarif offers will change next week with the new PM?
