I think last year we used 6000 on electric and 16500 on gas, hoping to cut drastically this year. We have a converted 3 bed semi, now 6 beds with the loft done.

DogandMog · 26/08/2022 16:43

900 kWh Electricity (solar panels)
7700 kWh Gas

4 bed end of terrace

PinballWizard18 · 26/08/2022 16:45

Why bother asking
Seriously, everyone is different, it's like you are scaremongering. Please don't 👃🏼

6,000 kWh gas and 2,500 kWh electricity last year. Two people, that was using the heating whenever we wanted it really but we are naturally quite frugal and live in Cornwall where it's milder. Hoping to reduce it this year a lot.

Mingusthebrave · 26/08/2022 17:02

Wow - those seem low to me.
We use about 8,000 kWh /year in a small 3 bed cottage - me and 2 teenage girls.
No gas or central heating (very well insulated and wood burner) .
I work from home and we run the washing machine and dryer about 3-4 times a week.
I'm wondering what we can cut back on to get our usage lower as we're looking a next years bill being more than £4,500 - up from about £1,700!

Why is it scaremongering to ask?

We use more than most people, but less than 8,000. I'm guessing you heat water by electricity?
I know electric showers can cost a lot if they're not kept short.

stairgates · 26/08/2022 18:40

Honestly not trying to scaremonger, just wondering what is the 'average' and if I am above or below which I think I am definitely above, which would mean my bills could be higher than the amount predicted. I worked out that my usage last December would cost me £775 at Octobers rates!

@DogandMog Your panels sound like a dream!

1100 electric, 5100 gas, 2 people, 3 bed semi.

Ilikewinter · 26/08/2022 18:57

Just checked 12 months to date.
Electric 2500
Gas 12000

So we appear to be high gas users compared to others people on here!

Coffeeismylifeforce · 26/08/2022 19:03

2 bed end of terrace, my son and I
Electric - 1828 kWh annually
Gas - 7805 kWh annually

itsgettingweird · 26/08/2022 19:14

Came get on ovo app to check but I did put it on another thread recently.

Something like

Electric: 2800
Gas: 5600

A year!

Totally wrong

Gas 6900

Electric 2500

So far this year by bill has been £550

findingsomeone · 26/08/2022 19:20

15000kwh gas and 4000 kwh electric. Four bed end terrace (old cottage). We have a complicated heating system which makes the gas so high. I WfH so use electric a lot in the day. Going to be reducing use of tumble dryer and dishwasher though.

Do you understand how the cost of energy works? You take your usage and multiply by the cost per unit and add on the standing charges

You don't need to carry out some odd crowd asking exercise Confused

MinervaTerrathorn · 26/08/2022 19:42

Calculator on here, just put in your usage. No one else is going to know how much you can bring usage down by.

Spacemonkey2016 · 26/08/2022 19:46

Our electricity is 2729kwh per year and gas is 5183 kwh. 2 adults and 2 young kids in an end Victorian terrace. I think our gas is slightly lower than average, because it's nigh on impossible to heat out house/keep it warm, so we have always wore jumpers/blankets instead. I just have heating on for an hour or so in the morning, an hour late afternoon and then an hour before bed. I won't go less than that, so we'll just have to find other things to cut back on. I'm in a fixed deal until October, so I've been immune to previous price hikes. My new bills will be quite the shock!

AlmostAJillSandwich · 26/08/2022 22:13

Electric i'm not sure as sadly we had estimated bills throughout 2020 and 2021 and then an actual metre read in dec 2021 was for nearly 2000kwh to catch up the estimates to our actual.
Gas is 11kwh a month as all we have gas is the hob.

You said you want to know how you compare to be average household; the average household that Ofgem uses for their calculations and the price cap figure use 12,000 kWh of gas and 2,900 kWh of electricity per year so you are significantly above that at 16,000 and 6,000 respectively I'm afraid.

Ineedtoletgo83 · 26/08/2022 22:27

I did the MSE calculator can get a fix at £483!!!!! A month and the calculator is suggesting I strongly fix!!!!!!! Paying £165 atm due to go to £220.

I mean we could reduce our usage but really how much will that affect our bills? I don’t think we are excessive users.

large 4 bed semi, dreaded open plan area. Gas central heating.

we use 17800 kWh of gas?!
and 3744 kWh of Electricity.

i wfh 5 days a week. DH two days a week. Kids home from 4ish most days.

Tigerblue4 · 27/08/2022 09:15

We've managed to get ours down a bit - Bulb are estimating 1683kw electricity and 7357kw gas. We're three people living in a converted dormer bungalow - four beds and an extension on back - upstairs draughty!

Ways of cutting back - we're going to delay putting heating on and really keep usage to minimum. Haven't got tumble dryer, and haven't used hair dryer/dishwasher for ages. Looking at meals that take less time to cook, and making pasta meals in bulk. My colleague said she's stopped ironing and clothes are having an extra days use and towel/bedding an extra couple of days use, so I've been doing that this week.

LadyShatterly · 27/08/2022 09:18

All electric 2 bed cottage (rural) 4,100 kwh electricity in the last 12 months and not sure what else I can cut, but working on it!

Haven’t used the tumble dryer since November, heating is not going on as we have a multi fuel burner and throws. I think I’m just going to have to light it in the mornings on cold days. I think it was last on in January.

BMW6 · 27/08/2022 16:56

Our useage in 2021 was Gas 10540 and Electric 1849

BMW6 · 27/08/2022 16:59

Meant to add our CH was on 7am to 11pm set at 19 - 22.

We are both retired so home all day, but we'll be turning on later and off earlier, and the thermostat down to 18. Bedroom rads will be turned right down.
