We fixed last month and are making a concerted effort to reduce our consumption and now both only shower at work with a cold shower at home but god knows how we will do that in the winter. That said I find it hard to see how the government cannot help a little bit more if the cap rises again. Businesses are going to become unviable and poorer families are already in difficulty.

We only really fixed to know our expense, if the government step in again perhaps a variable result will workout better. All a gamble.

We are lucky that we can afford the rise but are damned if we will use as much energy as last year.

@PeloAddict you have not provided the price per kwh or standing charge for the fix so we can't tell you if its worth fixing or not

Hidingawaytoday · 25/08/2022 16:26

I'm in the same position OP, our tariff runs out in October and had a similar email from my current provider, I also had another one today saying our DD is only going up by £17 from October which seems rather low so not sure what to do!

dementedpixie · 25/08/2022 16:27

For a comparison we need price per kwh and standing charge not the direct debit amount

PeloAddict · 25/08/2022 16:31

Ignore the post now!
I worked it all out, it was cheaper to fix and I used the kWh and MSE calculator and fixed
No exit fee

I've tried getting estimates to fix from different online providers and they keep saying to stick with my current provider. Where am I going wrong? I'd like to know how much I could fix for? Currently paying £240 and not in a fix. Had a quote from utility warehouse for £470 fixed. Has anyone else gone with UW? Why are they the only one I can get a fix with? Worried sick about this

dementedpixie · 28/08/2022 07:18

There are no cheap fixes which is why you are best staying with your own provider. You can't just take energy from UW and need to take other products too.

You arent doing anything wrong, it's just the way things are just now

pinkyponkyplink · 28/08/2022 08:08

Thanks @dementedpixie. Energy is the only thing I completely leave in my husbands hands and I feel like I should have looked into it a few months ago when he kept saying there were no deals as there clearly were. He wasn't to know so not blaming him. I'm just a control freak and it's the only thing I've left to him. My friend reckons she is on a fixed 24 month one at £124 a month until Jan 2024!

dementedpixie · 28/08/2022 08:13

The £124 price is not what she has fixed, it's the underlying price per kwh and standing charge. I came off a fix in February and there weren't decent fixes on offer so I'm on the variable rate. Some companies are offering their existing customers deals but they aren't open to others

KarmaComma · 28/08/2022 08:20

Lots of people can't get a fix. I was bumped from one company to another as my original provider went bust last year, followed by the one i was bumped to, now I'm with Shell (not by choice) who aren't offering any fixed deals, and other companies are only offering to existing customers so no point moving.

pinkyponkyplink · 28/08/2022 08:26

Ah that makes sense. Thank you. So worried. We cannot afford £500 a month which is what it likely to go up to in January

dementedpixie · 28/08/2022 08:33

The fixes are generally more expensive than the variable rate so a lot of the time you're better off not fixing
