WFH-ers...how are you planning to keep warm in the day this winter without spending a fortune?

The last couple of winters DH and I were both WFH so it didn't seem wasteful to have the heating on for an extra hour here and there to take the chill off. Plus, obvs, gas was basically free compared to this winter coming 😂. We have the heating on for an hour in the mornings and then a couple of hours early evening, then usually go to bed when it gets chilly. Going to try and avoid having it on other than that wherever possible.

I'm planning to get a small oil radiator for my office (only to be switched on when absolutely necessary), buy some sheepskin bootie slippers (apparently warmer than synthetic materials?), and layer up clothes, blanket on lap, wear a hat between Teams calls. Plus a lot of soup. Anything obvious I'm missing?

I've just ordered 2 oodies for me and DH to wfh in as there's a 241 offer on at the moment (2 for £84).

How much do the electric blankets cost to run?

Mine said 1p for 7 hours but i dont know how accurate that us. Its 120w

MintJulia · 22/08/2022 22:06

Sleeping bag and hot water bottle during the day, and a log burner in the evening

Blush21 · 22/08/2022 22:08

I’m a fan of a dressing gown, blanket around the legs with socks and slippers or a foot warmer and a hot water bottle shoved down the dressing gown if needed. Helped to warm me up without the heating

I shall be huddling up with the cat 24/7

Fluffy socks, thermal fleece leggings, lambskin slipper boots and a snuggly hoodie. I also have a electric blanket and heated pad. Although we've just invested in an efficient heating system so shouldn't be too bad this winter.

whiteroseredrose · 22/08/2022 22:12

Woolly socks, jumper and a blanket. It worked during WFH last time.

kegofcoffee · 22/08/2022 22:13

Sheepskin slippers. I warm them up with mini microwave hand warmers before I put them on. Plus a blanket and a thick turtleneck jumper.

I think I might set a desk up in the nursery this winter, because its the smallest room and gets a lot of sun.

That means it uses 0.12Kw per hour.

So all you need to do is find out your tariff for 1kwh, and you can work it out.

So say your tariff was 31p a kWh the 120w blanket costs 2.58p per hour to run.

Thats really helpful, thank you.

I find it only needs be on for 30 mins to 45 mins then the air under it is all heated up and the blanket keeps the hot air next to your skin for ages.

A friend of mine who works from home sits inside a sleeping bag with a hot water bottle on her lap.

Bit of a bugger to get out of when you need a wee! But she says it keeps her toasty warm.

AquaTorfanaa · 22/08/2022 22:23

I'm planning on buying an extra hot water bottle and an electric throw. I don't want my heating on more than necessary so I'll go upstairs to the warmest room in the house (my bedroom next to the boiler cupboard) and hopefully with a combination of socks, slippers, a fleece/jumper, duvet, heated throw and hot water bottles, it'll be fine.

I feel the cold very easily so I need to begin making preparations now.

Figgygal · 22/08/2022 22:24

Layers
Fingerless gloves
Fleece lined oodie which will whip off for calls
Flasks for boiled water for tea and cup soup lunches
Might go to office a bit more now petrol prices receding

Cece92 · 22/08/2022 22:24

I will be wrapped up and have hot water bottles at my feet x

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 22/08/2022 22:27

Heat the person and not the air/room if you can. So heat pads, electric blankets.. wrist warmers and two pairs of socks work for me. I don't usually wear shoes in the house, so I'm thinking slipper boot like things maybe the way forward for WFH

LovinglifeAF · 22/08/2022 22:30

I have fixed at quite a low rate last year so not too concerned about prices per se but equally I don’t want to heat the whole house when I am sitting in one room and the only one in. I have a heated throw, a normal throw, fingerless gloves, hot water bottle, oil radiator

DeanStockwelll · 22/08/2022 22:31

While I agree with wrapping up well ,with blankets , gloves etc I think getting in and moving around is more beneficial.

I walk up and down the stairs a few times or if it's not freezing/ chucking It down go gor a short but brisk walk ( 10 mins is plenty) well I realise that is not practical for everybody it works for me.

BringOnSummerHolidays · 22/08/2022 22:31

I am putting a blanket on my laptop and wear fleeces.

Rwealere · 22/08/2022 22:36

Am I the only one who can’t concentrate for very long when the air around me is even chilly? Wrapping up just puts a greater emphasis on the situation and makes me want to say forget this and turn up the heating :(

JustSaying101 · 22/08/2022 22:41

Porridge breakfast, lots of hot drinks/soup, my trusty electic throw and lots of layers. Really hoping it will be mild this Winter and not arctic conditions...

MaggieFS · 22/08/2022 22:41

My previous house didn't have central heating and I had an oil filled radiator which I still have. It's got a timer and thermostat so it's not just on or off. I plan to check the energy consumption if I can and decide if that's the best option.

I also have an ancient fan heater from my student days (£7 from Argos ~25 years ago!) but I presume that would be less efficient???

Last year I just stuck the heating on at lunch time to take the edge off but that won't be possible this year.

I'm also wondering about big poncho jumpers or a onesie! I'm ok walking around but sitting at the computer I chill quickly.

Letterasaurus · 22/08/2022 22:43

Heated throw. Absolute game-changer.

Mitsouko67 · 22/08/2022 22:52

Dressed to shoes with warm dressing gown on top. Warm jumper obvs. Blanket on lap.Hot water bottle. Fingerless gloves. Big woolly scarf.

Sometimes when I'm sitting too long and it gets too cold I go to local cafe to warm up and feel human again.

Haveyoubrushedyourteeth · 22/08/2022 22:54

Those of you tempted by the Oodies, if you don't have the 84£ to spare then Primark have their version in store at the moment for under 20£ each. I got them for the myself and the children last year, and they're very very toasty. I just need to persuade DH to wear one too now.
