Selling children's old clothes

scratchedbymycat · 21/08/2022 13:35

I need to raise some money and have a ton of kids clothes to sort and sell. Facebook marketplace drives me to despair. And the area I live in, I think most people are wealthy and donate to charity, whereas I am trying to make money any old how. I feel a bit exposed to everyone selling locally.

Which sites would you recommend for selling? I've heard scary stuff about eBay, but this is where I was planning to try.

Also prices ... what would you think is a reasonable price for Boden clothes in excellent condition? Or NEXT party dresses that have never been worn (due to lockdown) ...for example.

Many thanks

Look at listings with comparable items, that’ll give a guide regard pricing
ebay gets the most traffic, so lots of buyers use it.I’ve found it straightforward
Describe the items well and if bnwt sayso
if you’re non smoking no pets say that too, as a lot of buyers won’t purchase from homes with pets, or smoke
dont agree to collection and always use signed for delivery. Well known scam is buyers to claim non delivery and you seller can’t prove it was delivered. They get a refund.

I used to sell through FB but found it hard to shift anything towards the end. If you get a regular buyer who likes the stuff you buy and comes back can be good)

In the end only stuff I put on was 'big' stuff like coats and even at £4/5 for good quality light use ones I struggled.

Try Vinted @scratchedbymycat - I use it to sell DS' clothes and to buy new. You might make anywhere from £1-15 depending on the item, but there aren't any fees and it's super easy to use and navigate.

I've made £50 this week from 7 listings and just took them in one trip to the local Evri parcel shop.

Second hand clothes market on Facebook has tanked recently in my experience. I used to buy and sell a lot of fairly expensive scandi brands like Frugi, and nothing is shifting at the moment - event prints which were previously really popular and sold for RRP or higher.

I would recommend vinted for bundles, and vinted or eBay for single items worth £5 or more (BNWT branded stuff in sizes 2-3 or larger - baby stuff doesn't sell well) and wait for an offer on selling fees.

Depends on size and season. I don't think Next sell for loads even brand new, because they go so cheap in the sales.

Thank you all. I have a few Boden winter kids coats and I am wondering if I should wait to sell them in Autumn or go for it now? In autumn, people will be thinking about coats, but maybe more will be available on eBay...?

Sell them on Vinted ,
it’s much easier than eBay and no fees.
Even if you get a few pounds for each item it all adds up , the Evri postage option is the easiest although you will need a home printer for Evri option.

I really wouldn't reccomend ebay, for a few reasons.
Firstly if you need the money quickly, you'll be subjected to a 21 day hold on money after selling if you're a new seller, or haven't sold in a long time. I've eve3n seen on their help boards some sellers are getting held for much longer than that.
They charge fees, both to list, and to sell, which will total i think at present, 12.5% of total final sale price, plus on the postage cost you charge.
They heavily favour buyers. All any buyer has to do is say the items weren't as described, and you have to both return their entire original payment, and pay to get them returned. If they're unhappy with even one item in a huge bundle they could do this, and the whole process is automated so even if they're lying, you'll be forced to refund. It isn't unheard of for buyers to return the bits of the bundle they don't want and get a full refund while keeping a few items they liked, ofthen the expensive ones.

Go for it now. I just sold a snow suit

I use vinted all the time and make quite a bit.

sorbetseason · 22/08/2022 19:15

I just bought a good quality kids Boden coat for £10 on Vinted if that’s any help? But I’d say get it on in the next month!

I have paid up to £20 for good Boden stuff.

Thank you for reassuring me about sale prices. eBay was telling me that the average sale price for similar items I have was about £15, while Vinted was suggesting £5. So I was a bit perplexed and even reconsidering Facebook. I'd much rather use Vinted, so I'm going to go for it. Thank you all so much for the advice. Fingers crossed 🤞

I'm a little confused by how the buyer protection works. (Vinted) I see some items have it added in the listings, but can't see how to add it to my listings if I want to.

OP posts:
AlviarinAesSedai · 23/08/2022 21:49

Buyer’s protection is added automatically. You don’t need to add!

scratchedbymycat · 24/08/2022 08:55

Thank you. Day 1 into Vinted and so many questions ...

1/ Do sellers inflate prices anticipating loads of people will come along and ask to drop by a quid or two? I spent ages on my prices trying to be very fair and ask for what I want, and keep getting people asking to drop it by 2 quid.

2/ When you decline an offer, is it polite enough to just hit the decline button? I've been writing apologetic responses with each decline and it's getting tedious. Especially as I'm beginning to think most are chancers. What is best practice?

And another question. Someone asked me to reserve two items, which I agreed to do. I see the reserved defaults to five days. I assumed the reserve request was so they could quickly double check with someone, and I'm surprised they didn't come back and buy within a few hours. I'm now not sure how to politely deal with it. Could be a serious buyer: could also be someone who has forgotten or changed their mind. In the meanwhile, no one can buy those items.

Also, wondering generally what others do about reserve requests? Would you hold something for five days? Or limit it to 24 hrs or a few hours?

I think you've answered your own question!
Unless you actually know the person I wouldn't reserve anything for them - especially if you want to get rid of stuff and earn money.

Amichelle84 · 24/08/2022 17:00

I use Vinted and find it really easy!

You can withdraw the money you make to a bank account or you can keep it on your account and use it against purchases.

I've actually decided we have so much stuff we're going to do a car boot or something as it does get a bit faffy posting it if you've got a lot.
