What are your recommendations for cheap but filling snacks and lunches for during the summer holidays?
Also some treats.

homemade banana bread with over ripe bananas

humous and carrot sticks

quesadillas (toasted tortilla wraps filled with cheese etc)

I love quesadillas because mini wraps tend to be quite cheap and last longer in our kitchen. Bread goes mouldy quickly!

homemade chips with leftover potatoes (cheesy chips mmm)

beans on toast

english muffins with tomato sauce and cheese grilled (like a mini pizza!)

Flapjacks
Jelly
Homemade ice lollies with cheap fruit juice

Kiplingsroad · 24/06/2022 14:12

Buy some bread flour, tinned tomatoes and block of cheese and make pizza (these are also good cold).

Peanut butter and apples.

Homemade hommous made with stick blender from a tin of chickpeas and some some chopped up carrot, pita bread etc.

any homemade cakes/muffins/cookies are going to be cheaper than buying readymade. Smitten Kitchen has some great cookie recipes.

@Kiplingsroad I'm not sure about home made being cheaper anymore if you don't have the ingredients in already.

Mine tend to have wraps, hummous and pitta, they love canned tomato soup with cheese and spaghetti hoops on toast.

A big Spanish omelette is pretty cost effective.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 24/06/2022 14:15

Raisins (buy big bag) and cubes of cheese (again cut from block).
Pitta bread and homous
Cheese melted on crumpets

Treat - ice cream bar, vanilla ice cream, sprinkles and sauce
make your own ice lollies with squash

I’m mostly following this thread.

@Yodaisawally Yes that's true, it depends on the ingredients too. Cookies with oats, flour, butter tend to be cheap but then so is a packet of biscuits. The thing for me is staying out of the supermarket and using up what I have by cooking, as going to supermarket especially in holidays with kids is what costs me money.

Kiplingsroad · 24/06/2022 14:20

Also frozen fruit for smoothies & freezing overripe bananas too for smoothies or banana cake. I keep bread, tortilla wraps etc in freezer so there's no wastage.

Some good ideas above! My dc also like

  • crackers with cheese / cream cheese
  • apple slices with a spoonful of peanut butter
  • toasted pitta bread slices with humous / cream cheese
We do make our own bread, cakes and biscuits when we have time. Although it's not always much cheaper, you can control what's in it, and even though a homemade lemon drizzle cake is not healthy as such, it's made from natural ingredients so better than shop bought. I bake a lot so have a lot of equipment and ingredients already, so this helps of course.

Hard boiled eggs
Tuna mayo for sandwiches

Cheese dream: grated carrot, grated cheese, grated onion. Mix with mayonnaise, use in sandwiches. Use strong cheddar.

Tinned fruit and ice cream

Elvis sandwiches - peanut butter sandwiches, fried in a pan with a smear of butter. Very filling

Tonkerbea · 24/06/2022 15:24

Bananas are about the cheapest fruit going.
Noodles with sweetcorn and an egg. Call it ramen if you want to be fancy.

womaninatightspot · 24/06/2022 15:28

Pasta salad. 23p for penne frozen corn, peas, fresh carrots, lettuce. Cesear dressing or a bit of mayo. Add boiled eggs or chop up whatever sliced meat is in fridge if you need the protein

MovinOnUp · 24/06/2022 15:33

All fantastic ideas, Thank you.

Also a bag of popping copcorn from world food aisle popped in a small amount of oil and a pinch of sugar/cinnamon/salt is cheap, fun and full of fibre

MintJulia · 24/06/2022 17:39

I've a hollow-legged teenage boy so need things that fill him up.

Marmite on melty-butter wholemeal toast is ever-popular
50p kiddy supermarket pizzas.

When the oven is on, I bake a tray of small potatoes, cut crosses in them and add grated cheese and chives from the garden. Then leave them to cool. DS helps himself when he has the snackies.

I still have frozen sliced apple from last year so I make trays of apple bread (wholemeal flour, butter, chopped apple, little bit of demerara, baking powder).

Big pans of chunky veggie soup & wholemeal bread.
Wholemeal pittas toasted and stuffed with any leftovers. cheese , meat, black olives from a jar etc

livingthegoodlife · 27/06/2022 19:36

Tea loaf cake - packet of cheap mixed dried fruit, soak it in tea over night. Cheap cake.

Cheese & biscuits (basic crackers & cheese).

Breadsticks.

We make homemade bread. Also picnic "tear & share" loaf.

Lidl ice creams in freezer - family selection box. A couple of quid for about 15 lollies.

TheClitterati · 29/06/2022 11:46

scones - take 10 minutes to make, 12 minutes to bake, delicious & pretty cheap
