How to install a water butt?

I don't know much about them despite researching them online from time to time. I noticed that somebody had one connected to their downpipe in their front garden. If you have a few downpipes around your perimeter then would you need several water butts and who is the cheapest supplier? Thanks

Do you have a shed or greenhouse? Our neighbours have gutters round theirs that collects into a butt, he set it up himself so not sure on cost etc.

Thank you. I have a summerhouse. It doesn't have guttering. I suppose that the aim is to capture as much rainwater from everywhere in the garden. I am not sure about sizes/maintenance.

Check out your local water utility company. I'm with United Utilities and they were reasonably priced and came as a full set up

I disagree.

We have 5 water butts. I think with Youtube videos & some practical skills they are easy enough to install.

How would a waterbutt save you money, OP?

Definitely check out your water company website. Ours sell discounted water butts and also give away free water saving devices too.

I am joking. Mumsnet is a difficult site to make jokes on, some threads are sincere and some are joking about.

We have 3 large sheds with several 240 litre water butts around each. The largest shed has 5 butts all connected together with pipework, and the other 2 have 2 each, also connected. There are taps at the base, and to make access to them easier, we stood the butts on raised platforms so that the watering cans can stand underneath easily.
Guttering around each shed is essential, and for winter we have diverting pipes so that instead of the water still going into the butts when they're full and overflowing during heavy rainfall times, the water is channeled to the trees and hedges in the garden.

As we have a water meter this system has been really useful.

What?

This is - partly - an odd thread!

Anyway, we bought these 3.5 years' ago. They were £28 quid cheaper then!

They're a tad cheaper via United Utilities now (£4-ish quid).

We bought two slimline water butts from Aldi recently. Think they were about £25 each?
It came with feet & diversion kit.
We found a B&Q video about how to fit it. You need a hack saw or similar yo saw through your down pipes.
We've fitted them to save in the snout of tap water we use to water our garden.
