Hi everyone, I need to learn to drive and save up for car as we moving to cheaper rental house with little to no public transport.

Please advise me how we save money on lunches, everyday items household, food etc. I do No Buy/Low Buy year in general.

We keeping Clubcard points for Christmas savings club.

Must save about £2,000 for lessons and a car.

I have no savings be earning about £100 a week. I cannot cycle to work as childcare in the opposite direction first and multiple school and nursery drop offs. I always be walking. I have put a post on village and school and nursery notice board and on fb for possible help.

DP cannot help with drop off or pick up either. he works all the hours he can and he cycles with bycycle.

I need to squeeze budget to the absolute maximum or I'll be stuck.
I've thought about : making my own washing powder, frugal meal planning, no buy/low buy. I need to save save da save away as much as possible. We don't get benefits except child benefit. Advice please

DP covers current rent and all bills. He has no room for savings. If I want to learn to drive and have car I need to save up myself. Minimum debts such as credit card (70% paid) and tax credits overpayment from years ago.

Please tell me your best ever tips to save money and free some up to be saved for driving. My independence is really important to me! I needs car

Earn about a hundred pounds a week.
Please be kind and help me! Really grateful for help, thankyou thankyou please 🙏 🙏 🙏

So you have £100 a week? What does that have to cover? What facilities do you have ? By this I mean do you have plenty of freezer space? Are you close to and Aldi/Lidl? Can you afford to bulk buy? Meal planning (realistic and strict) , shopping at Aldi/Lidl, selling off any old clothes etc will help.

£100 a week my wages and covers bus fairs, top-up shops, uniform, we just have a small freezer under fridge, top up nursery costs, birthday presents, playdates, Netflix stuff we need but can't get at Aldi - school and nursery costs. Husband does shopping at Aldi then top-up shops for bread and milk are at Tesco but that's walking distance and we are collecting points for Christmas.

Meal planning help is good please we are not eating take out or having treats. Pasta and veg, veg curry and rice, beans on toast, toasted sandwich, soup, crackers, using left food over from night before, cereal for lunch or dinner. How do we save money on hundred pounds week? 🙏

It sounds like you're struggling and certainly wouldn't be able to save. You're on a low income, have you actually looked at what you might be entitled to claim (even if it's just help towards childcare costs for example)? It's okay to claim if you need it.

I’d be thinking a out how to earn more rather than saving when things are already tight.

I’ve seen lots of good ideas on other threads. A little extra income on the side . A shift in a shop or bar . Cleaning for a neighbour . Temp admin work .

Will the net benefits of cheaper rent be worth it?

Running a car is expensive, insurance is high when you are a new driver, service, MOT, road tax, breakdown, an cheap old car will need regular repairs, petrol.

SendARavenToRiverRun · 15/05/2021 09:00

Sounds like you need to up your income rather than make any.more savings.
Keep in mind that once you a car and you've passed your test, it's expensive to run and maintain. Good luck.

legosnowqueen · 15/05/2021 09:06

It sounds as if you don't have much wriggle-room, is it too late to find somewhere else to live where you'll have access to public transport? Cars are expensive to run & maintain, even if you can save for the initial outlay.

I found savings challenge save small amount each week and at the end of the year you saved thousand pounds! That might be good plan for low budget. And look for weekend job.

What does your Dh earn?

Cornishclio · 21/05/2021 23:45

Sounds like a false economy to move to a cheaper rental if you then have to find money to pay for driving lessons, buy and run a car. Without you increasing your income it will be difficult and not quick as you have to learn to drive, take and pass your test then buy a car and on your income it will take a long time to save £2k.
