l need to find a second income. I don’t think matched betting is for me (not that l have tried it) but l was thinking of paid surveys, but l have some questions. Do the surveys pay cash or vouchers for Amazon/other places? Do you have to pay tax on this money? I could do two hours 4 nights a week would this be enough to earn some money, ideally l would like to earn £100 a month.

If l took a second job in the evenings (not sure how l would do this as l work 44 hours a week, have two primary aged children) but what is the rate of tax l would have to pay.

I am am going to look through all my bills to see what l can cut down/ get better deals on.

In my main job l pay to be in the union, but l am not someone who has ever needed it or l can’t imagine why l would need it. I don’t use the members offers. It’s £11 a month, but l am weary about dropping it.

I haven’t got a lot to sell and this needs to be constant not a one off.

Could you look for a higher paying job with the same/less hours dependant on your salary?

Not easy in the current climate obviously but might be worth a shot for a long term solution.

IME surveys take a long time for very little reward and not something you can rely on as many will let you through then suddenly cut you off as you're not suitable for whatever reason.

Earn £10/Day April Thread...we ain't no Fools! http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/legalmoneyy_matters/4207913-Earn-10-Day-April-Thread-we-aint-no-Fools

Try reading this board. There are lots of people earning some extra money doing paid surveys and legit online work like transcriptions and shop reviews.

Swagbucks! You can make £100 a month in Amazon or virtual MasterCards if you are prepared to do a lot of surveys and are quite active about reaching targets and getting your bonuses. I’ve done it before - not easy as such but also not especially hard, you can do surveys on your phone. It’s legit and pays out quickly. I’ve just paid for a year’s Disney+ with the Swagbucks money in my PayPal account.

AcornAutumn · 09/04/2021 11:32

For me the most obvious answer is cleaning work

The main reason to be in a union is legal help with employer disputes. Is it possible that's already covered in your home insurance? If it's not, it might still be cheaper than your union.

AcornAutumn · 09/04/2021 11:34

Gravity I can't seem to stop Swagbucks spamming me. Unsubscribe doesn't work, block doesn't work. Wish I had never signed up.

CRbear · 09/04/2021 11:36

Do you have a spare room you could let to a lodger? You can make up to £7000 ish (I can’t remember the exact figure) tax free under the rent a room scheme. Also you can earn upto £1000 tax free per year from self employment so if you have a hobby you could monetise that could work- you have to think about materials though as it’s gross £1000 not net, so tutoring would be more efficient than cake decorating or carpentry if you see what I mean.

Solongtoshort · 09/04/2021 11:47

Wow thank you all for your quick replies. Unfortunately there’s is no progression at the moment at work and our pay increase has been put on hold till next year and l understand why.I don’t think people would like there home cleaned in the evening when they are relaxing and my job is physical do l think l need to do something sitting down. I will look at my home insurance regarding cover.

Thank you for the links l am going to have a look now.

Could you advertise to walk dogs? I have no idea how much dog walkers charge but if you could walk a single dog or even 2 together for 45 mins each evening and charge £5 per dog. That would give you £25 each week for about 1 hours work. You could drop flyer through letterboxes to get customers. Alternatively you could walk 2 or 3 dogs some nights and still get some nights off. A bonus would be you would get fitter too.

If you don't like dogs you could try babysitting. You could offer Friday evenings and would only have to do it one evening each week.

My sister makes character cakes for children's parties. She loves baking so it is not like work to her. Sometimes she makes cup cakes and decorates them too. She has done it got 4 years now and gets regular customers who she makes all the cakes for their family, birthday, parents golden wedding anniversary cake etc. She keeps a photo of each cake she makes and has them all in a portfolio. She keeps her earnings below tax fresh hold.

She has a friend who Crochets baby jackets for small babies. Again she loves doing it and actually only charges a very small amount on top of wool for her time but she could easily charge more.

I’ve just started matched betting last Sunday and have made £110 so far. You can’t really go wrong with the start up offers. I’m working my way through them, you do need to keep a log and spend a few hours watching the videos to see how to do it properly, but you’re not risking your own money and you’re not relying on a certain team winning like with traditional gambling. Though I did make a mistake at the start and gained £30! Lol. I am not sure how I’ll go with it once I’m doing the ‘reload offers’ - so once I’ve exhausted the free start up bets but even if I just do the start up bets for £400 ish and call it quits it will be some money towards my holiday! But hoping to carry it on as long as I can. It plays right into my love of spreadsheets and researching and at the moment it doesn’t take me long each morning to place my bets, then evenings I’ve been signing up to new sites. Really enjoying it

Yes, you do need to declare survey income as self employed. You are very very unlikely to make enough to push you into a new tax band.

farmerswifey2 · 29/04/2021 23:36

I make about £20 a week completing surveys for Branded Surveys. There are always lots available, so I could probably make more if I had more time/inclination.

My referral link (which would net me a full 40p should you use it) is

(Otherwise google Branded Surveys if you'd rather not use my link).

We’ve just emerged from a period of time where my husband wasn’t working and agreed we would aim to earn an extra £500 per month to get some extra cash for treats and fun. We did a bunch of things - sold tips and real life stories to Take A Break, did some freelance writing and ebayed stuff, as well as reviewing all our direct debits and negotiating the lowest possible rate for everything. I also upped my working hours 2 hours a week as was part time. Good luck, you can do it!

Tiddleypoms · 13/05/2021 19:27

Some cleaning can be done in offices at night .
Bar work now open wef from.next week . Loads n loads of jobs in some places.
I do ironing amd dog walking. Both pay above min wage.

DuchessMinnie · 15/05/2021 10:44

Try hospital cleaning as there are always evening shifts.

For surveys, I use:
Qmee- handy for instant payouts
Appen Connect- I earned £58 last month and I only do the Facebook surveys
Prolific- research for universities etc
Streetbees- can be repetitive but useful as it drips small amounts of cash into PayPal. Here's my referral link and I get some pennies for referrals if you use it
I just started using Streetbees! Use my referral code 78177H :) onelink.to/streetbees

Hello - sorry very late to this party. My hours have recently been decreased and I really like my job so don't want to have to move if avoidable - the decrease in hours should hopefully be a short term solution for approx the next 6 months so looking to be able to bump my income up by earning from my phone/home in my free time!
I clicked the link above and it seems great - are there any up to date links??

Many thanks!

I currently do surveys on Attapoll and it lets you have your money as cash (via PayPal or Revolut banking) or Amazon gift cards. You need either £3 (or £2.50 for Amazon) to cash out but it’s instant! The surveys vary in length and pay anything from 1p for 2 simple questions, to £1.75 for a good 15mins worth of clicking... it adds up, I’ve earned over £30 and I joined in Dec.
You can find it on the App Store, or use my referral code Star
Download the app here: attapoll.app/join/krdor
You get 40p immediate bonus, I get 20p and bonuses if you complete a survey.

I also do YouGov, which I enjoy as I don’t get screened out and the surveys are interesting, but you need £50 to cash out and that takes me 2-3 months. Worth doing, it’s a helpful amount to have come in when it does.

evtheria · 12/01/2022 10:56

Aside from doing online surveys (which can be hard going and unreliable if that’s all you’re relying on) is there something you can do from home like:

  • online tutoring
  • teaching/conversing in English over videocall
  • taking in ironing (must factor in cost of electricity for this)
  • delivering leaflets or magazines, just locally

I've been using an app called Freetrade lately which is a trading app but they have a great free share referral scheme. When you sign up for the app via a referral link, you are credited when a free share worth between £3-£200. Then each time you refer a friend (up to 10 referrals per month), you both get a free share. I've made about £50 just from 4 or 5 referrals. You do need to deposit £1 into the app to claim the free share but you can then withdraw it again once the free share has come through. My referral link is below!

Do you have a partner so you could work a night ?
One or two night a month as a HCA / carer in a home or your local hospital bank.
