Left my husband - universal credit

This weekend I finally got the courage to tell my husband to leave the house after asking him to go 8 months ago.

I’m worried about managing the rent, bills etc on my own and I have been told I could apply for universal credit as a single person despite working full time. I set up an account and started to add my information but a few points are worrying me. I will obviously ring them on Monday but for my peace of mind could anybody please tell me:

  • if I can put my status as single even though I am legally married? Husband has moved out.
  • I have stated honestly that two people are on the tenancy, but that only myself and DD live in the house. I foresee it being a pain to get my husband removed from the tenancy as he is currently hostile and in denial, will this go against me?
  • I pay childcare costs for wrap around care at DDs school, but I don’t think it’s a registered childcare provider - would I still be able to get help with this?

I have never claimed before and I’m feeling a bit lost at the moment. If you have read this far - thank you!

Yes you can make a single claim if he has gone.
It may be classed as an 'untidy tenancy' - you need to let them know on your journal that you are currently solely responsible for the rent.
The childcare provider will need to be Ofsted registered to get help. Most after school clubs generally are I think.
