Gas and Electric winter bill!

O.k. So just looking for a comparison. Moved in. Old property but we 've had to put in brand new central heating (so brand new boiler!) and electrics.

October was £187 for gas and electric combined

November's bill has just come in at £217 Shock

Obviously, British Gas now want to increase my DD to £180 a month (from £100) which I'm going to ring them about as I can't afford that in January straight after Christmas.

I work from home in the day, but I have started to leave the heating off . We have 2 showers a day (uses the gas) and my tumble dryer/washing machine is on a lot.

But does this seem excessive?! 2 adults, 2 children, 4 bed semi,

I don't think that's right OP. We are in a 3 bed semi, retired, mainly home all day and using circa £75 at the moment dual fuel with Bulb. We put the heating on all the time and turn it off at night - thermostat set to 23c.
No way am I going to be cold - having said that we have downsized but in our previous 5 bed, 3 bath 4 receptions our DD was £210. I think you need to get your gas checked!

Somethings wrong with your gas - have you double (triple!) Checked your reading? Theres no way you've used that much gas.

notapizzaeater · 10/01/2020 23:03

An you check the usage on a daily basis ?

RainMinusBow · 10/01/2020 23:04

We are 2 adults, 2 pre-teenagers in an old three-bed and our current DD (Bulb) is £60 pm. I thought that was expensive?!!!

We both work ft so don't have the heating on when we're out and really careful with how much we use the tumble dryer. No dishwasher (not enough space, diddy kitchen).

Tumble dryers can use lots of power.
If the heat is on 20 all day and 17 at night that mounts up.
You are heating 4 bedrooms. What temp is water set at?
Plus working from home means more cups of tea and the kettle is a high user.

3 bed Victorian with floor boards and huge original windows and 3 adults, only costing £77 per month with Combi boiler through Bulb. Something seems odd with yours OP!

Dear OP
Thermostat set at 20 (say like now, it's cold!) but it turns down to 17 overnight and in the daytime. (I put a jumper on)

Do you really have the heating on all night? Turn it off at night, that will save you a lot. Also check that your insulation is up to standard.
